10% of Brain Usage Myth

Those that believe in this oft-repeated myth may in fact be evidence that some humans truly do not fully utilize their brains.

To the best of my knowledge it has to do with the fact that at any given time, no more than 10% of your neurons fire at once. Of course, if it were higher, one would not be smarter, but would be in seizure.
I always use the V8 analogy. Only one cylinder fires at a time, but the entire engine is fully utilized.

I always thought the 10% myth would have fit into the movie The Matrix. Instead of the stupid idea that humans give off power that would be needed along a form of nuclear fusion, why not use: the human brain is the most efficient computer known. The machines give us 10% to keep us alive and the other 90% is for their own use.

Yes, you're right, the myth did arise from the late 19th century discovery of glial cells, which outnumber neurons 10 to 1. Here's a great article about just how busy glial cells actually are:

It seems as if what they're saying is that we use every part of our brain. I certainly don't have any argument against that. That seems obvious. But are we using every bit of each area of our brain? That's another matter. If our brains allow for a lifetime of growth and learning, then each little area has opportunity for massive amounts of growth, at least from infancy onward. So maybe evaluating what percentage of each part of the brain we use, then adding those together and getting an average percentage would tell us how much of the whole brain we use. Correct?
I mean, that seems to be right... else our brains would fill up before we're dead and we wouldn't be able to learn anymore. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

you cant theres a limit to preception due to a part of the brain that i cant recall what its called. learned about it in bio. also the Dr. talked about how psyches can cause dyslexia due to the brain not being able to control that part of the brain, causeing left and right competion. lets say your raised right handed and born left, when you take psyches your using both at the same time and the limiter limits ability so your using less then a normal person in each given side

It's not really a myth, more like a matter of semantics. 1-10% of our brain is active at any time, and we "use" 100% of this 10%. We use different parts of our brain for different functions, so it would be impossible to use up all 100% at the same.

i dont go to the school any more but ill ask some one else in bio. the thing about being a Bio major and the reason i quit bio is cause after you learn most things you never use it again and have to forget alot of the names to make room for new stuff. social sciences like anthropology and history everything builds on each other and is constantly changing. I love how people that took bio in the early 90's tell me things that have been proved wrong and still cling to it. My prof knew alot of things and was head of the department but there were specific things i knew greater. thru bio i met the person i extracted DMT with and a girl that loves Dissecting animals and will pick em up from yards or side of road to. she was hot but out of her mind.

Something like this, which I find AMAZING beyond words, makes me wonder what it is that is different in the mind of an autistic as compared to "us".... I ran across this link as posted in the Art & Music forum.... His brain/head looks to be of normal proportions, so why is it that most people could not pull off such an incredible+ act....?
You can watch and see the human potential of a brain, but how does that potential actually get realized by someone other than the "actor"....???

Cool stuff Only that I don't understand why all the people who can't (or don't want) to communicate and make social bonds are considered to be mentally ill. Also, I'm having difficulties in believing that there's only one cause for "autism", which means that putting them all together is a huge mistake. But it wouldn't be the only one...
