Those that believe in this oft-repeated myth may in fact be evidence that some humans truly do not fully utilize their brains.

To the best of my knowledge it has to do with the fact that at any given time, no more than 10% of your neurons fire at once. Of course, if it were higher, one would not be smarter, but would be in seizure.
I always use the V8 analogy. Only one cylinder fires at a time, but the entire engine is fully utilized.

The obvious answer is no. Still... I could have had a V8.

I always thought the 10% myth would have fit into the movie The Matrix. Instead of the stupid idea that humans give off power that would be needed along a form of nuclear fusion, why not use: the human brain is the most efficient computer known. The machines give us 10% to keep us alive and the other 90% is for their own use.

Yes, you're right, the myth did arise from the late 19th century discovery of glial cells, which outnumber neurons 10 to 1. Here's a great article about just how busy glial cells actually are:

Maybe they do, but they just didn't mention it.

Incorrect. Some v8s fire 2 cylinders at once.

Interesting.
Glad you brought this up, I was thinking about this just maybe yesterday.
