My First Grow - Now Colonizing

Hey there everyone.
Ive been reading across this site for about a month now, and two days ago i inoculated 5 PF style jars. Im making this post to record my grow, and to use you guys on the site to help me smooth out anything i may be doing wrong
Tuesday 11/September -Used Mr.Clean disinfectant to wipe down work table, hammer + nail, etc. -Punctured each lid four times with nail -Mixed 1/4 cup Brown rice (Diced into flour in a coffee grinder) into 1/2 cup Vermiculite and 1/4 cup water -Loosely dumped into 1/2 pint jars -Top 1/2" of jar placed dry vermiculite -Lids screwed on, Jars placed in boiling pot with cloth on bottom to prevent glass on glass -Sterilize for one hour -Removed Jars from Pot and placed on counter where left for two hours to cool -Took off tin foil lid, inoculated 1/2cc into each hole, 2cc's per jar. (one 10cc syringe total) -Jar lids loosened (to allow gas exchange) -Jars placed on a high shelf in my room(Higher=Hotter,[between 20 and 30 degrees celcius]), and under towels to keep dark.
Currently Im going to wait until jars are fully colonized, then birth them into a Poor Man's Pod .
Im constructing the pod from a 20L rubbermaid bin, using perlite for the bottom layer, and having an aquarium air pump pushing air into the water layer of the bottom, creating bubbles and humidity. The center of the lid will be cut out, and i'll make a clear lid out of either plexiglass or saran wrap and tape. Also on the lid, i'll poke a couple holes allowing air/c02 to be pushed out. Through the system of bubbling and air transfer, the pod should be mostly automated.

Aerates the substrate more, allowing mycelium to colonize more easily. Yours look a little too tighly packed...

Odd. when i put the substrate into the jars, i just tossed the mixture in and made sure not to pack it down at all.

medium fine vermiculite is actually whats recommended, coarse vermiculite doesn't do as well in my experience, but that verm looks uber fine grain.

good deal. def use the medium grade verm. i'm new to all this but i just inoculated 13 cakes this evening and one of the few things everyone agrees on is to use medium grade verm to keep your substrate airy and loose. hoping for the best. let us know how they go!

I havent updated this in a while because my computer died and i wasnt on the forums.
A couple days ago all my jars got contaminted... I believe this is from storing them on my shelf. In a couple days im going to try another batch and i'll try to be more sterile and I'll store the jars in a completely sterilized rubber maid bin.
Any suggestions or comments appreciated

Did you flame sterilize your syringe before each injection, and did you use a glovebox? If not that may help avoid contams again. Also, if you are leaving the holes open I wouldn't loosen the jar lids, the holes should be enough for fae, imho.

damn that sucks, look liked it was going pretty well.
I have to say, well done for coming on here with ur first grow and not asking stupid questions..
You have shown that u have done plenty of reading.
I have never seen that contam in a brf mix!! i have only ever got green/blue mold and it has always showed up before myc.
I have had that problem recently as a result of not using a glove box. Something that u could do is tear a peice of spunge, soak it in alcohol, flame ur needle and cover the needle in the alcohol soaked sponge. So this acts as a cover and keeps it clean.
Another thing i noticed that i wasnt doing when i started getting contams was taking a shower. Also anther thing i never done on my last few batches, where i got contams was that i wasnt cleaning the lids of the jars with alcohol.
Just noticed that u do not have anything coverying your inoc holes, and since u have used fine grade verm, it might have been possible for a contam to get thru the verm layer.
If u have miropore tape, use that to cover the inoc holes it will still allow gas exchange.
And try and get medium grade verm aswell. especially for the verm layer.
Good luck on your next batch.
