Do you think the media dictates soceity and taste or vice versa?

or is it a mixture of both effecting each other?

I was thinking to day about what your average 20 year old girl finds to be the penultimate attractive male... any way you cut it, it is going to be a whole lot different from the guys like Fabio that flabby suburban, 45 year old moms swoon over.
That is just one example, but I feel like pop culture/media dictates popular culture.

The question in simpler terms is: Are we begin supplied with what we demand, or are we fed so much shit we are liking it.

I mean, I understand that some television shows bomb because no one liked them even when they had all the elements of what should have been a hit series.... but it feels like people are just choosing one flavor of shit over another flavor of shit.
is popular demand dictating what is given to us, or are we given something and made to like it through repetition or sensationalism?

i think the media is controlling the future of society by misguiding the public into appealing them towards their products for their own profit. they're capturing the hearts of american people and putting them in designer jeans or putting them in chief grand cherokees with virgin mobile phones. theyre using our own culture against us in an effort to create an image that we will follow blindly, and in turn, boost their income and popularize their name.

everything around us is fake. nothing is real.

actually, i don't think i have any clue what i'm talking about.

I think that it is difficult, if not impossible, to draw a line between "the media" and "society," as all those who participate in producing "the media" are also part of "society."

As far as influencing taste, I'd say it depends on who is being influenced.  Some people want to like what is popular, and will go out of their way to inform themselves, via the media, as to what they should like.  Others (myself included) prefer to try a little of everything & make up their own minds about what they like or dislike.  They are unlikely to be influenced by the media, unless it is their only source of exposure to new experiences.

It is the media controlling people's minds, but this wouldn't exist if there wasn't public demand.
You can't say that people are so naive and unaware of what's happening to them and what they want. It is true that they make these choices because of personal weaknesses and fears, nevertheless, they are aware that there are other options for them.
The truth is that those who let themselves manipulated do it because they they don't want to face their issues.

All this time I've missed you

Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

i lean towards the latter...

In "Hidden Persuaders" (1957) Vance Packard shows that marketers made extensive studies in 'depth psychology' in order to more effectively and subtly influence people. I think a lot of what could be seen as consumer demand is actually just programming we've taken on because of effective marketing... and also, what MT said.
