If there is black/purple stuff growing on plants and you are not really sure what it is what do you do. What would it be??? Should they cut those parts off??? Anything would be helpful.
thank you

Probably mold. Amputate the affected region. Lower humidity if possible.

Mold grows on "Honey dew" which is the excrement of bugs on plants and can look like that. The mold actually is just growing on the excrement and not the plant itself..if that makes sense. See if you can wash it off with water because the excrement is a sugary liquid that the mold grows on and will dissolve, taking the mold with it.
If that works then look for tiny bugs (barely visible bumps) on the underside of your leaves...probably Aphids.

Also known as "Sooty mold". Sap sucking insects(aphids) do not have the ability to digest plant sugars.

Yeah, that does suck, man...sorry. Still, have them look for bugs though cuz if they were there, they are more than likely still there and the mold will just reappear.
They can try just blasting the bugs with a good spray from the hose to the underside of the leaves, but that probably won't get them all. They could try a good insecticidal soap also, but once again, that may not do the trick. Search here for Aphids and there should be threads on what you can use to get rid of them..if that's what they have.
What type of plant is it? A ficus perhaps??
