New drug scanner detects traces of drugs, used to check people entering pub
    #7403095 - 09/12/07 11:07 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

DRUG SCANNER CHECKS PUBLIC

Scores of pub-goers in Bicester were tested for traces of illegal drugs during a police operation aimed at tackling violent street crime.

Police used the force's new drugs itemiser - which scans people for traces of banned substances - at the Litten Tree pub.

It was the first time the new technology, which detects traces of drugs from heroin to cannabis, had been used in the town.

Police officers tested 150 revellers as they arrived at the pub in Sheep Street between 10.30pm and midnight on Friday.

The pub managers barred anyone refusing to co-operate with the test from entering.

Det Sgt Steve Duffy, of Banbury CID, said two people tested positive and were searched but not found to be in possession of drugs.

The pair were then banned from entering the pub, but not arrested.

Mr Duffy said: "It went very well. We gained the full co-operation of the management and the customers.

"Everyone was very supportive and compliant.

"We swab people's hands and then that swab is placed into the equipment and it gives a reading of the level of drug residue.

"If it's above the background level then we use the equipment to give us the power to search - it gives us reasonable suspicion."

Mr Duffy explained the machine also picked up tiny traces of drugs that innocent people could get from handling contaminated bank notes.

But he said officers only searched those showing a more substantial level of drug residue.

He said: "The public were very supportive. Many people were saying they wanted to be tested.

"Bicester has no bigger problem than the rest of the country but we are never complacent.

"It gives us an indication of drug activity and where it's taking place. It is part of a wider initiative to reduce violent crime.

"We associate binge drinking and illegal substances as being one of the causes of spontaneous unprovoked street crime."

The drug itemiser was also used in Witney and Banbury two weeks ago. About 260 revellers were tested, with one person arrested on suspicion of possessing class A and C drugs. Two others also tested positive.

When are they going to issue all drug users with a patch of a yellow star? And if we don't have it off to "rehab camps" we go

you would think this might be concieved as a violation of one's private life, especially just upon entering a pub. cops these days are looking for any possible way to bust people for their personal lives, its disgusting .

That is fucked up. I would never comply with that. That is more like guilty until proven innocent and I don't like the sounds of that.

If I believed in fear I would say that this is a frightening development.

Upon further consideration, I've decided that it's just another amazing and unbelievable step forward in the crazy witch hunt against those who would dare to consume substances in a respectful and private manner.

What they need to do is to make one of these for single guys so they can test and see if the chick they're dating....

Never mind.

Not that I would like cops, but you do realize that they had nothing to do with making this invention, right?

Of course not, cops aren't smart or they would have gotten better paying jobs. But I bet they couldn't wait to get them in the mail! I'd whip out my dick and tell 'em "Swab this motherfucker".

Det Sgt Steve Duffy: "It is part of a wider initiative to reduce violent crime."

How ironic that this new technology is being tested on people entering a pub where alcohol is being sold. The drug alcohol is responsible for more violent acts, accidents, and deaths than all other drugs combined.

as this device becomes more widespread, i reckon many pubs will eventually get them removed because about half of their patrons would test positive and they would lose business

Next logical step is to embed the technology into everyday items such as toilets, door handles, cell phones, computer keyboards, etc. Now add in the RFID personal ID chips they are wanting to implant in people and you can see what 2084 has in store for us...

That really couldn't work here though could it? Doesn't our US money have trace amounts of cocaine on it? If this myth is true, Everyone would be setting that thing off, even the police.
