Sup I just wanted to get some info from ya. I have been reading up on growing and cultivation but I am still a little shady in areas. First is perlite a suitable substitute for vermiculite? If not am I screwed? And second am I going to need to give the casings light at a certain point or does light really matter? Again I am a first timer at this and any help would be awesome. Thanks

No perlite is for humidity in the fruiting chamber.. Vermiculite is used in the actual substrate.

Light is used to initiate pinning. After the mycelium is poking through the casing layer evenly (partially colonized), you expose it to light. 12 hr cycles of light/dark is what is generally recommended.

Perlite holds no moisture, and is not an effective additive to increase aeration.

I used the perlite in my substrate mixture. I got the recipe for the entire process from this site and followed to the very detail with the exception to the perlite instead of vermiculite.

Perlite is not good for aeration??? True it doesn't absorb moisture(but does distribute quite well as far as humidity). But many years of the love of dirt has never left me to believe perlite wasn't good for aeration. In fact, in soil, that is exactly what it does. It's function if you will.

Beard tree is not screwed. Not that the perlite is really doing anything for him. Nothing detrimental about him doing this. Once or twice i have experimented w/ for spacing of bulk wbs bags. No contams, no stall. Myc. still grew on the perlite (the perlite was treated with liquid plant food). He'll be alright.

Did you use the perlite in a P.F. Tek????????? That can be a problem as far as supporting optimal moisture to those types of cake. And also creating problems when you go to dunk your cake. A fully colonized cake that has been flushed at least once could be hard to permeate and get to draw in needed water for successful 2nd and 3rd flush(yield wise). Sorry about the you be alright stuff, I mean you will, but in this style of cake that would be an important material(vermiculite that is) to pull out of the equation. My thoughts tend to jump to wbs spawning to bulk. Forget people start off w/ P.F.'s. Good starter lesson. But if successful move onto teks you can shake and colonize in 6-10 days rather than 30-40.
