I flipped over one of my PFtek substrate jars just to see if it would speed up the process, but instead a small black mold formed near the top, about a half an inch high and a quarter of an inch wide. The rest of the cake was completely colonized, so using a sterilized blade I cut off the top inch of the cake before placing it in the fruiting chamber. bad idea? first time, someone help me out. thanks

well flipping it over would not of caused a contam. there must have been another factor were your holes covered? did you open jar at any time? was there verm on top? and why would u flip the jar anyway if it was colonized. as far as cutting the inch off your just gonna have to wait and see but if i were you i wouldnt keep that jar near the other ones maybe a seperate fruiting chamber is needed. just because there is no more visable contamination does not mean spores are still in the jar which chances are very high they are. if i was u i would of thrown it out by opening the jar to put it in the fruiting chamber you may have contaminated the room it is in which is probably your grow room. also make sure that if u do decide to keep the cake and put it in another chamber that it is standing the same way it was colonizing in the jar or ur mushies if any wont be right. hope this helps.

This has been done before with limited success. If anything, isolate it from your other cakes to be sure you don't spread the contams.
If it doesn't look like the mold penetrated any deeper than the part you removed, you may have saved your cake. Still, it's iffy, and it might just end up getting nasty again.
Hope it works, any amount of contamed substrate is enough to make my heart ache.

Laying jars on their lid/side will greatly increase your chances of getting a contam.
