Yikes.
Are there any choice mushrooms that death caps resemble?

I seem to recall some news of recent Japanese immigrants in the PNW mistaking poisonous amanitas for matsutakes years ago.
Coulda been urban legend, too.

there are a few that are close in the Lepiotas, IIRC.
http://www.uoguelph.ca/~gbarron/MISCELLANEOUS/leucoqag.htm
And I think Pluteus has some that look similar, but the pink sporeprint would give them away.

it's not an urban legend... there have been poisionings of mostly asians who mistake the Amanita virosa for the paddy straw mushroom. They don't have A. virosa in their region, so they don't know to watch out for an all white mushrooms.

In this case (the specimens in the photo) and in the cases I know of from California the mushrooms were A. phalloides, an equally deadly mushroom that is also easy for some people to mistake for a Volvariella. A spore print would immediately show the difference, but beginners don't do spore prints very often or understand how important they are in identification.
Happy mushrooming!

I like to eat Amanita lanei. But those have hollow stems, a different smell, and several other differences.
Index Fungorum says Amanita is in the Plutaceae, but Wikipedia says its in the Amanitaceae. Which is correct?

oh, I didn't check my sources on that one... May have been phalloides that I was thinking about.
I have found A. phalloides in my back yard at my previous residence. They can vary quite a bit in appearance with regard to cap color. Mine were a silvery color with a greenish tinge.
