Straight vermiculite casing
    #739403 - 07/11/02 12:25 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I cased 3 broken up PF cakes in Straight vermiculite 3 weeks ago, I picked 10 shrooms out so far and I have about 40 more coming up. this is ALOT more yeild than the PF cakes only... I am very surprised casing is easier why does everyone say to just use the cakes for fruit?

because if a cake gets mold u can just throw THAt cake out..but
if ur casing gets mold, all the cakes that took to case it ,must be thrown out!

Casing will give bigger yields, but if it goes bad u lose more cakes too!

I also did my first case with a straight verm and found it quite easy to put together (pin waiting now)
but i heard casing with dung is more riske and requires more steps

1 cake per casing?? thats a pretty weak mycellium network then =[

The more cakes in a casing the stronger the network. And they say u should have a 1" thick colonized cake layer
that means with one cake that would be a very small casing container to achieve 1"

I have never seen any1 use 1 cake to case with...! Is it even worth it???

i use 1 cake casings all the time! and they are SOOOOOOO worth it!
its better to use atleast 1and1/2-2 cakes per casing but it will still work.

The strenght of the mycellium network dosnt always depend on size, but the isolate and establishment.

is there a better more efficient way to case though. say if i was to use 50/50 or something else other than striaght verm, which i have stuck to, would better yeilds be expected? or do they all get the job done fairly similar? just somethin that crossed my mind.

Exactly why many people move on to bulk methods.. kilos of substrate instead of hundreds of grams..

Im using 1/4 pint jarz...
as a newbie (and like most newbies) I'd like to see results a little faster than normal and 1 pint jarz will not give me that
unfortunately. Once I have a little more experience (and success) at the basics
I'll then move on to rye grains and dung and all the other interesting stuff ppl use here...then i wouldnt mind using 1 pint jarz.
But one thing i shoulda bought when i first started was a PC....using the boiling pots is too
riske for newbz, at least thats what i think! But who cares what i think
cus
im a
sBUD!
