Does this jar look good for day 13?
#7401555 - 09/12/07 05:36 PM (16 years, 4 months ago) |

This was the first time I've spawned to grain, so the growth looks healthy (Especially where the black Canary seeds are).
Problem is most of my jars look more like the Myc around the millet. I'm getting worried that perhaps the moisture was too low in my grains.
Thoughts?

Looks to me like your on the road to success my friend! Seems like all of the black seeds are at the bottom. Did you forget to shake your jars? I shake the hell out of mine once they have colonized around 25% to redistribute everything evenly. Sometimes I will give them an additional shake if I notice that certain spots are colonizing a lot faster than the rest but it isn't really needed IME. GL!

Looks great! Remember that Rhizo myc will colonize more agressively than the other. That is one of the reasons we like to use agar and petri dishes, (isolate strong rhizo myc and then transfer to grain). I say you're doing as well as you can with what you have.

Awesome to hear. You just totally connected the "why?" for me with Agar and Petri. Can't wait to try some stuff out with that.
I'll be casing this, not spawning. To 50/50+. I finally caved and bought the 50 pound bag at my feed store. At least it's way smaller than the 50 pound bag of cracked corn I got once.
This is the result of a G2G, which is why it seems colonization is taking so long. When you start from spore syringe to jar, then to jar again, it takes a while.
Oh how I'm regaining all that long lost patience

Update:
See, what has me worried is that since Wednesday (4 days ago), the jar has not changed much, if at all. Temps have been normal (83-84).
So now it's been 17 days total
Is it possible that really old spores may not be strong enough to colonize its myc over wbs?
I'll post an updated pic when I get a chance today.

If those are surrounding ambient temperatures, then you're looking at them being a bit higher inside the jar and to its core. Also, what is allowing the gas exchange? I can't see on top of the jar...(I tried! ) If there are no holes, which I'm assuming since there is no foil on top, then they are probably stalling due to lack of gas exchange.

Well, I have 3 hold in each jar, with a Tyvek filter disk. The holes are about 1/5 of an inch in diameter. So 3 of those on each jar.
Could I prematurely case in order to prevent complete failure.

i dont think so, u really need to wait till its fully colinised, opening it early could result in contamination of uncolinised area. give it some more time, myc growth tends to slow down as it runs out of oxygen. have u tried giving it a wee shake

with 3x 1/5" holes chances are the grain at the top of the jar is drying out.one hole of 5mm (sorry, european) is all i use. i would spawn it to a bulk substrate or case it now if i were you.

Right, but if it's nearing "stalling", then how can I save them.
Pictures coming up shortly.

Here's the same jar, 4 days later.

This is a picture of another jar. Looks good, but now sure if it's stalling as well. Same amount of days.

Here are the lids I made:

trust me, you'll know if it stalls and yours have not not all jars are going to be the same colonizing time. if you really want to do something to the 2nd jar shake it and leave it be for a few days
GL
im sorry to jack your thread but how do these look for day 9? maybe i should wait longer

Orissa India eh? I just got a syringe of that. Can't wait to try. I hear they are fast colonizers and larger fruits?

You could providing that you were careful enough to not use any of the non colonized,as mentioned above just giving it a good shake should buy enough time for the others to catch up,either that or put them in the fridge until the others are ready

I wish myself success as well. Since I made these jars using another jar, this incubation period is lasting forever. Good thing I xfered G2G, because the previous jars stalled. I have one left that is probably close to two months old, and you can still see the grain, like in the picture I posted above (Jar 2). No mold or contams, it just doesn't seem to want to colonize further. The grain always looked drier than my second batch, so I'll chalk it up to that.
Just seems like as it's about to over take the grain completely, it totally slows down. Not sure if it runs out of moisture due to improper wbs hydration, or if my lid holes were too large. Heck, maybe even both.
I guess that's why WBS isn't recommended for beginners. Seems like you have to develop your own method that you know works 95% of the time.
If this batch of 12 jars goes out the window, I will try again, this time one jar at a time, so I don't waste seed and time.
I will keep you posted guys. Thanks for the tips.

i would keep the jars and dont throw them away unless theres contams heres the tek i followed http://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek
rye is alot easier, it colonizes faster, and its less messy in the kitchen
keep us posted

I can't find Rye in my area unfortunately.
I heard WBS was easier to hydrate properly anyhow? Less issues with endospores too.

If it stalls, you can open the jars, wash away the uncolonized stuff with cool running water, and use the mycelium nuggets for spawning. It's not ideal, but it can work.
At the risk of boring the readers out there in mushroom land, the best way I have found to do WBS is to weigh out the grain and the water, and PC it. No soaking, no straining, no nothing. Half-pint jar: 60 grams WBS, 30 grams water, 30 mins PC.
It's worth trying.

I'm not quite sure how to make a tek, or how to submit it.
If anybody else wants to, feel free. I got the idea from Stamets. More of the story here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7399453
