? about dark cornered cakes
    #7401037 - 09/12/07 03:10 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

two of my cakes are dark in the corners. This is because I sprayed to much water on them and it puddled and this was the result.

Will those 2 cakes still fruit? Or should I toss them

Thanks for any info,
eleven34

There is a couple of black spots. I picked off one of the chunks and threw it away.

Black and dark blue are different. Black is a mold while blue is bruising. Only time I have had cakes bruise with out handling is when my humidity was way to low.

A picture would help, but it sounds like damage from the water as you said and not mold. Don't toss it until you check in at the contamination forum and browse some pictures. If it's mold, it will be a separate zone of mycelial growth, distinct from the mushroom mycelium. The mold spores are what are green/black/yellow/etc, and they'll be a separate layer on top of the mycelium, as if you sprinkled colored sand on the substrate. If it's bruising or metabolites, it will simply be a change in color, but no change in the structure of the mycelium.
