Pasteurization barrel
    #7387484 - 09/09/07 09:55 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

Hola,

I have a metal barrel that is used for pasteurization of substrates, it is food grade. After using it for a while the inside has become rusty and I wanted to know if it can affect the mushrooms grown out of substrates pasteurized in it (mostly straw), like flavor or if they will contain any toxic compound digested by the mycellium.

Gracias

Un saludo.

The rust should not be a problem unless you are soaking/fermenting in the barrel for a few days. Even then i really don't see rust being a problem.

I agree. Just don't cut your finger on the barrel.

Rust isn't a problem, in my experience.

Thanks for the replies

Do you guys do something useful with the water after pasteurization? I´ve read in GGMM that it is an excellent organic weed-killer, have you ever tried?.

Why not paint the inside?

Well, if rust is not harmful for this purpose, why spend time and money painting the inside?

To stop the rust, because your barrel will form holes in a future!

However you should find a paint that rexist to high temps when you pasteurize it. IMHO when a barrel forms a lot of rust you should to change it, rust isn't a good thing, and you can cut your fingers.

You should find the paint that is used for the inner parts of the silos or big pits like the one to make the wine (it's a red paint).

The rust is not that much at the moment, but it sure will get bigger with time and use.
I´m gonna try to find that kind of paint in ecological cause I´m not sure if conventional is gonna be safe at all. Need to know how much is gonna cost cause the barrel didn´t cost that much.
Another option could be to get huge plastic bags and pasteurize the straw inside them and wear some gloves to avoid cutting myself. What do you think?

Muchas gracias Fabio.

Saludos

If you are using a propane burner you risk melting the plastic on the bottom sides.

You can rock out with a unfinished barrels for a few years with no worries. You can get them for cheap also. I see no need for painting or worrying.

Just let them dry out between batches. If you are setting up a big steamer, I have seen them sitting with water in the bottom continuously. Being used almost daily. The bags would come out with some rust on them, but no worries after all.

How you setting up the barrels? On the side? Maybe get the barrels with the removable lids, use them standing up? No cutting needed and round edges.

homebrew beer suppliers ship malt in enamel lined 55 gallon drums. outside of stainless steel (way exspensive)they are the holy grail of straw boiling set ups.

I raise the barrel using bricks at the bottom sides so the burner can fit underneath. The setup is basically what you can see in the mushroom cultivator p.117 except the shredder.
