Has anyone had better result placing very small seeds on top of the dirt rather then burying them?

si,
petunia violacea do better this way, as well as tobacco, catnip, coleus, all the smaller sand-like seeds
same way as cacti, press them into the surface of the soil gently with a flat object, and water by misting

The general rule with ALL tiny seeds is to place them on top. In fact, the planting depth is usually correlated tot he seed size. Others will actually small seeds with a fine soil and scatter that thinly on top. this is better outdoors when wind might carry away a lot of your seeds. It seems to ground them a but better but is not always necessary. Indoors, I find it works best to sift out some fine soil and place a layer of this on top, then sow the seeds on top of that so they have something good to sink into as soon as they sprout.

it is essential for kratom for example, as the seed germination is triggered by light.
as for cacti seeds, i dont even push them in, just sprinkle with a very fine layer of sand, that has pretty much the same effect as pressing them in though...

When i did my sinicuichi, I first pressed down the soil, then sprinkled seeds and then lightly watered it (I was thinking the water would be good enough to get them each a spot in the soil), and the next thing i knew there was a pot full of them.

I sprinkled a few Rustica seeds on some soil, put plastic wrap over it, and after just 2 days, bam! There's about 10 rustica seedlings each half a cm tall... that was fast.
