Three-day wait proposed for magic mushrooms

A NEW proposal from the mayor of Amsterdam is sure to be considered a bummer by certain visitors to the Dutch city: a three-day waiting period to buy hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Mayor Job Cohen wants to require the wait period to allow mushroom buyers to fully understand exactly what it is they are purchasing, ANP news agency reported overnight.
The proposal seeks to prevent impulse purchases and follows several incidents that have occurred in the city involving tourists who have eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms.
In March, a 17-year-old French girl killed herself by jumping from a bridge in the city after having eaten mushrooms.
Under the proposal, potential mushroom buyers would have to show identity papers when visiting one of the "smart shops" where they are sold in the famously tolerant city.
They would then be given a card with the date listed on it, as well as fliers with information on the mushrooms.
Three days later, the mushrooms could be collected.
The mayor detailed the proposal in a letter to Dutch Health Minister Ab Klink, ANP said.

Now, that seems like a responsible way to do it.

Is this for repeat customers as well?
Is this for foreigners only?

I like it... thinking out side of the "just make it illegal" box! I also like the education aspect of it, "They would then be given a card with the date listed on it, as well as fliers with information on the mushrooms."
> Is this for foreigners only?
Donno... I would hope it is for first time customers, foreign or not.

I wouldn't mind registering in Holland, it's legal there. Like having a waiting period for beer in the US. Annoying, but if the alternative is no beer... I could live with it.
Edit- hopefully, repeat customers could have a card on file with the smartshop. "It's me, customer #321. I'd like the usual please- I'll pick it up Friday afternoon".

This is good. May stop the stupid kids who get drunk, do shrooms and jump off bridges from ruining the fungi's reputation in the future.

OneLessForeskin said: If you read the Shroomery News Service forum at all you know that there have been a couple of bad incidents this year - tourists leaping to their deaths while on mushrooms - stemming from psilocybin purchases in Amsterdam. Pressure is coming down on the smart shops to close...
Yesterday while hanging out with a couple of friends this came up and I thought of something. Wouldn't it be wise to instill a waiting period, 3 or 5 days, like they do with the sale of guns in the United States? I mean, it makes a lot of sense.
Most of the accidents that arise from mushroom-ingestion come from tourists. Tourists who have spent all day drinking beer and smoking joints and essentially are in one mind-set - "let's get fucked up!" There wouldn't be a test of any sort, or a background check of any sort either, because no vendor has the right to judge anyone else's right to take mushrooms (though obviously any business reserves the right to refuse service if they think the person seems disturbed.)
I think a waiting period would severely cut down on any chance of a terrible accident because it forces a person to think about the fact that they are going to trip and to prepare themselves for it, rather than just spontaneously knocking back some cubies or cyanescens for kicks, on the fly.
After you wrote down your name (in a ledger guaranteed to be kept locked in private by the mushroom-vendor, perhaps even your record of purchase would be destroyed after you picked up the mushrooms) you would come back in 3-5 days, depending on how long the authorities decide the waiting period would last. Upon leaving, you would also be given pamphlets, which would cover
- how psilocybin affects the brain
- how psilocybin affects the body
- the basic notions of set and setting
- various tips for safe and responsible use
- dosage information
What do you guys think of this modest proposal?

I'm pretty sure the 3-day rule is to get rid of the problem's associated with weekend 'drug' tourists.

I like this better than the "ban it" mentality, but I think they could do a lot better.
I'd like to see them require people to take a 1 or 2 hour course to learn all about what they're getting into. Once someone has been properly educated, the waiting period really doesn't make sense.
Unless the idea is to keep it out of the hands of the tourists.

That is the idea, but I have no problem with your plan. A little good education to offset all the lies they force upon you in lower education (at least in the US). Take a week class and you get a license that allows you to put anything you want into your body without any legal hassles. Sign me up.

I think its a good idea too. It will stop the people who are all cocked up from chowing down on half an oz just because its there. Give's you time to cool down and think about it.

Now this is what is gonna happen.
Local drug dealers are going to start walking up and down the streets saying mushrooms mushrooms.
Now the tourists will get it from a shady source

I think its wrong on a moral level, but it could be for the best in the current climate as I understand it.
I think a better proposal, for all involved, is for the vendors to introduce their own regulation whereby any new users or users who can't prove local residency, would have a waiting period. This would likely reduce impulsive idiots doing dumb things while avoiding the evil of government imposing unnecessary rules. SOrt of like how the movie studios in the USA avoided government rating and censoring legislation by forming a voluntary rating system, still in use today.
