getting those dang sunflower and floaters out of wbs

so I figured there has got to be and easier way to get rid of those floaters
step 1 measure how much WBS you will need and put it in your pot
step 2
start filling the pot

step 3 let the water overfill your pot

step 4 empty the pot to amount of water needed for your soak

step 5 turn on the garbage disposal

you dont need to remove the sunflower seeds. they contain lignin, which mushrooms use in the building of cell walls. i have used wbs wih sunflower seeds in it for years and have never had a problem. it is the sticks and wood debris you need to remove.

They eventually swell and sink if you leave them to soak with the others...
You can actually colonise pure sunflower seeds on their own, and fruit from them - their just not ideal.
Mixed in though they pose no problem, and as stated, probably actually help a lot.

I used to take out the floaters- now I don't even soak. 60 grams WBS to 30 grams of water makes a nice half-pint. 30 mins PC.

i read that soakin germinatessome kind of thing in the seeds that tolerate high temps and when you soak em they dont

I read the same thing. I only tried this because it's in Stamets' book- I figured it was worth a shot. I've had better, more consistent results with this method than I have with any combination of soaking or simmering. Try it, see if it works for you. At worst, you're out a few cents worth of WBS.

Can you do that with any kind of amount, such as a quart, as long as it's 2:1 wbs:h2o?

As I stated, I use 30 minutes in the PC for half-pints.
For quart jars, I use 1 cup WBS and 3/4 cups water, but it's just a smidge too wet. But 2/3 isn't quite enough. So weighing it should produce a better result, 120 grams WBS to 60 grams of water. Cook quart jars a full hour.
Success rate for half pints has been excellent. Don't have an exact number, but it's been easier for me to get the right water ratio.
One improvement on this would be to put the water in by weight, but still let it soak to germinate any endospores. Start with hot water if you are doing it that way.

Well I've already done WBS once before, but that sounds a lot easier.

Dr T Im real intrested in trying this method out..but now im confused
youi say I dontsoak em just put x and y(2)
then you state ..might be better to soak..wouldnt soaking change the water content of the WBS??..there by changing the ratio??
so have you done quart jars with the no soak..Im having ALOT of trouble getting my water content right with wbs ..
I dont have any 1/2 jars left only pints and quarts
and a question in general youi have had no problems with endo spores????

I always take them out. They soak up too much water and start to rott. I like to take a 5 gal bucket and fill it half way with WBS then put water in at ameduim rate while i stir everything up with my arm. All the seeds come to the top easy

I like to separate the sunflower seeds but I don't throw them away. I let them dry out and put them in a bird feeder for the birds. That way when if my neighbors see me bringing 25 pound bags WBS they can see I actually have a bird feeder. Also I like to watch the birds.

He meant adding them to the jars and letting them sit/soak in the water before pcing them. I have found letting them soak exactly 36 hours, drying them, and loading them up, gets me the exact moisture content. Simmering never did work out very well for me.

I had a lot of trouble getting the water content right. Too wet = bacterial growth.
So, I took 100 grams of WBS, and simmered it until it was done to taste- not crunchy anymore, abut 15 mins. Then I drained it, laid it out on towels and blotted it, until it was really dry.
Ok, so at that point the WBS had absorbed the right amount of water, I reweighed it. The difference was the amount of water that the grain had absorbed. For me, for this particular brand of WBS, that was 1/2 the weight of the WBS.
Now, I tried it. I weighed out the WBS and water, then PC'ed for 30 mins. And shot it up with a known-good LC. This was side-by-side with soaked grain, 12 hours, 18 hours, and 24 hours. And simmered grain.
Yes, I went through a lot of jars of grain- but the answer for me was obvious in the end. For consistent, reliable growth, no other method compared. 60g WBS+30g water for 30 mins.
Now, you're doing pints instead of half-pints. Double the amounts of grain and water, and PC for a little longer. 40 or 45 minutes probably. Or for quarts, 4x the amounts, and PC for an hour.
Give it a try, see what you think. I've found it to work very well.

Follow the tek here http://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek
Germination of the endospores (soaking) is a key thing to do because without it they can withstand the temps of the PC and can possibly cause contaminations!
I dunno, I always use take out the sunflower seeds but as I think they would just sink to the bottom once they hydrate...I dont fill up my pot no more then 3 inches...I dont think its necessary to fill it up to the top.
To get those floaters out if they really need to be out just buy a $1 crappy metal fish net

Yeah, I know. That's what everybody says. But I read this method in the book, and tried it. And it worked better than anything else I'd tried. So there you go. Try it, or don't try it- whatever works for you.
But anybody having water issues should at least give it a shot.
