I plan on cultivating some very legal edible fungus... I was wondering it seems that a lot of sites that speacialize in selling products to help me do this it seems that the main benifit of these products is ease of use I feel like I can find the products around me to cultivate whatever I want and need is it really worth the money to pay more and work less?

Urm the questions a bit vague. You can make a low budget home setup quite easily. Small incubator or heatbomb & a poor mans pod. Next maybe a glovebox? Its best to to as much your self because once you learn how to do it youll be able to grow stonking amounts of mushrooms. What products are you looking at? also which edible fungi in particular?

yea, as acneman puts it, buy your own stuff, if your going to do casing, then the CHEAPEST way of doing it would be to make "PF-Cakes" a mix of brown rice flour, vermiculite, and water. inoculate them with your syringe, and keep them in a fairly constant temperature place, and once they're fully collonised, take them out, crumble them, and then you can simply put them in a tray with another layer of vermiculite (or vermiculite and peat moss) ontop of them, and grow casings. All up if you shop around, i'd say you could do that ALL for around $30 to $40 especially if you already have your syringes. If you want to do grain or anything else then you're going to need a pressure cooker. (which you'll probably end up buying anyway) Goodluck with it, and read as much on the forums as you can!

As i said its good to learn how to prepair things yourself. http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek is a good guide, best advice i can give is have a good real around (check the rest of the cultivation guides) and come back with specific questions. Depending on how much you want to grow, your budget and your technical ability/competence then certain techniques/setups become more advantageous. What exactly are you planning on doing?

Ive helped a few friends and watched while they did grew there's so i figured i would give is a shot i have mostly just kind of done what i was told as my buddy did it but he always did single jars at a time I am wanting to try and d a few and make a casing to try and produce a lot more i have money to work with $100 dollars at the most I have my four seringes i want to make four jars using brown rice flower like he suggested and make a casing I was thinking of using a big tupperware enclosed basket and making the casing inside that and then getting the basics light temp guage using a spray bottle ect.. does that sound like a solid way to cultivate ?

Sounds good to me, Youd be best of with straw or dung but you can do well without. Planning on incubating?
How about a poor mans pod with individual trays say 4" by 7". Its best to have as much humidity and water content as possible assuming you want to grow monsters. Also the pump takes care of the CO2 (and the spray bottle). Iv cant recall seeing anyone do a massive single tub with grain. On straw or dung its a lot more common
$100 dollars should be enough, again how much do you want. a tub in tub and a poor mans pot should produce an excellent grow room. Then all you have to worry about is sterility, on that note do you have a pressure cooker?

Wow awesome that looks a lot more reliable for a first try I will try the poor mans pod I was going to try to incubate but seems like it would be way easier doing it your way no I do not have a pressure cooker but i have already seen one that I could buy if i had to. And i meant using grain only for the individual jars I am looking to use all 4 seringes I dont have a specific amount i want i am tryng to get an idea of how much more i can get using this method as opposed to my friends for sure i will take your advise and try the poor mans out first

Poor mans pod is a fruiting chamber. Tub in tub is for incubation (you could also use a heatbomb). You only need to use 0.2 0.3 ml for a jar so i cant see you using all 4 syringes. Also check out liquid cultures and do a search for matazapec in the grow log section

So you are saying I could use more jars and still fit them in the same fruiting chamber?

no youd get the inoculated jars and incubate them (via tub in tub, heatbomb, electric blanket or even tin foil and a few layers). then when the substrate is fully colonised you'd take it out and case it in a tray and then place in the terranium. youll want to dunk as well
