A few garden pics (loph graft/p. cartha/cacti)

Thought I would post a few pics from the "garden". A graft I made with a Lophophora Williamsii var. Caespitosa
Some of my Psychotria Cartha seedlings (I might trade some of these if anyone is interested)
Icarus DNA grafts
bridgesii seedlings
and my pedro family, (they are all cuttings from the specimen on the top left I received 3-4 years ago.)
Maybe I will get around to taking some more pics later

I love the pedros. And I really long for my cacti garden to get to where yours is.

i like the grafts i never tried grafting in quite that manner, so im curious as to why u do it that way and not flat grafted on top of the stock?
id be a little afraid that they might pop off when they grow a bit bigger and the stock would rob alot of energy from the scion.

I was wondering the same thing. Is it just more of a challenge, or is there a benefit? It would seem that the graft would grow faster if on the top of the stock, if that was the purpose of the graft. very cool tho..

the scion definately wont grow as fast with the stock still using up energy on growth... but aerole garfting does look pretty cool... ive seen a few with multiple scions on one peres stock...

These were my very first grafts. When you top your pereskiopsis to receive a graft, does it not grow two separate shoots? I topped the graft plant and placed the seedling directly on top of the pereskiopsis and this is what happened. I'll post a pic of a peruviun graft I did that shot out two separate shoots off of it. Any tips will be welcomed.
here is a better pic of the icarus dna graft
Here is the doner seedling it came from, recovered pretty well
Here is a better shot of the bridgessi seedling

yes, always, and often alot more then two new shoots... now i can see better wot u did... they were flat grafts originally, but u allowed the stock to grow a new branch... its normal practice to cut any new shoots off the stock as soon as they start to grow... therefore all the stock plants energy goes into the graft, and not into growing its new branch.
pereskiopsis is a real pain for offsetting, even if u continually cut off the new shoots, it keeps growing them for quite some time... eventually it should get the message and give up offsetting though

so you are suppose to just keep cutting off new shoots? Would it be very beneficial to go ahead and cut off the new shoots now? It is definitely growing faster than the "control" seedlings, which are to the right of the pic I took to show where I got the cutting of the dna seedling. Thanks for the info though

Yes To All ! All new growth should be removed as soon as possible. The plant energy expended growing the shoot next to your scion would have been much better expended on your scion itself. The whole process of growing new shoots is controlled by hormones, and once the scion gets large enough it will produce enough Auxin (plant hormone) to discourage offsetting.
Earlier in this thread, aureole grafting was discussed. Seedling grafting to Pereskiopsis S. can be beneficial in 2 situations. If space is a problem, obviously. I've had as many as 9 aureole grafts plus one scion on one Pereskiopsis. The scion will grow fastest, while the aureole grafts are somewhat slower, with the lower aureole grafts being slowest. Which is the 2nd reason for aureole grafts on pereskiopsis. Scion grafts usualyy offset profusely, and the resulting plant does not look at all natural. Of the 50 or so aureole grafts I've done, none have developed multiple offsets, nor do they have that bloated, unnatural look usualyy found with most Pereskiopsis grafts.
Good luck and good growing -- OTP.

yep cut cut cut see how the scions looks a bit purple and dehydrated, thats cos the stock is putting more effort into itself rather then the scion, eventually id expect the stock to reject the scion in your situation.
keep the offsets trimmed and u will be amazed at how fast the scion can grow.
take a look here and u can know wot to expect
