Wtf is my problem with pinsets
    #7398713 - 09/11/07 10:00 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Im starting to get really frustrated here with my pinsets. I've done quite a bit of reading up on the subject of all things pinning, but I'm still have major difficulties.

I've tried cakes straight from the jar, straight cakes dunked, cakes dunked n rolled in verm, MGMC, & jiffy mix (ph adjusted w hydrated lime/non ph adjusted for each), plain aluminimum trays, cased aluminum trays in the aforementioned casing mixes, monotubs uncased and cased w/ above.

Currently I am using 2 setups...

==Mono tub(s)==
-6,15,60 quart tubs
-roughly 12-15 1" holes stuffed w/ poly fill
-enough FAE for LIGHT condensation, no dripping 90%+ rH (best guess)
-80/20 coir/coffee substrate 2-3" on smaller tubs 4-5" on 60 quart
-B+ Spawned from WBS
-Cased w/ jiffy-mix pH adjusted to around 8 w/hydrated lime

==Aluminum Trays==
-3 or 4 different sizes, wide&shallow to narrow&deep
-80/20 coir/coffee spawn substrate, spawned w/ WBS
-THINLY Cased w/ jiffy-mix pH adjusted to around 8 w/hydrated lime
-FC's have just enough perlite to cover bottom (prevents pooling)
-95%+ rH & 73-78 F according to meter

I am consistantly having problems with pinning. Almost every damn pin comes from the sides of the trays/tubs, not from the top. This is of course with a few exceptions. What am i doing wrong? The only thing I can think of to try is the wax paper over the top of casing method. Does anyone have any other suggestions/analyzations of my setup/problems? Thanks in advance!

The pins grow where conditions are best. If the sides are better than the top- what's different? Not enough humidity? Too much light? The mushrooms are shy, and you look at them too much? give the wax paper a shot, it couldn't hurt.

How thick is your casing layer?

Also have you read hyphaes pinning strategy? http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=60&Number=3290155&page=0&fpart=1

You should level out your casing layer with a sterile fork. Try to make it even. Make sure you put a fine mist layer over the casing before you begin to start fruiting.

Keep your light cycles at 12 on 12 off (this isn't as important as other factors)

FAE is probably the most important pinning factor. Make sure your casing is getting plenty. If you are using a mono tub try putting it next to an open window, or using a fan in your room.

If you are having problems with side pinning put extra casing material around the edges and mat it down. This will help out lots.

Hrm... I haven't tried overcasing the sides, that sounds like it might help. Its pretty much gotta be a humidity issue, but i'm still baffled. Thanks for the input, I guess we'll see how the side-casing/wax paper goes.

BTW... I must be doing something right though. Even though my monotub fruited from the sides, and there arent as many fruits as i'd like, the ones that did fruit are monsters! I'm talking in the range of 9-11" high

Maybe your issue is too much water then. Maybe you are getting your substrate too wet. How long on average is it taking your tubs to colonize?

I would agree with your assessment of too low humidity. Pins want near 100% humidity to form. If your grow area is far below that, the pins will form along the edges where the humidity is higher. Another cause of side pinning is if you used too much lime in the casing mix.

might the casing layer be a little too compact? if it was really wet and patted down, wouldn't that make it difficult for pin formation?

Ok, so here are some pics. These are some of the smaller initial fruits, I don't have any pics of the biggest ones unfortunatly.

So im still trying to figure out this humidity thing. I have decent FAE and plenty, if not too much, moisture in the tubs but I think the issue is not enough humidity.

My hypothesis is that because there is so little room between the sides of the casings and the tub that the humidity levels stay much higher there, while the surface of the casing is moist but the airspace above it isn't as humid as it should be. The next question is how am I gonna go about increasing the humidity. I think it might be time to invest in a humidifier instead of 2x daily mistings.

well wtf man? those things are huge for cased cakes, and they're just the initial "smaller" fruits? jesus christ..

I have no idea what you're complaining about, who cares if they only come from the sides, look at them.

Yeah, those do not look small. Small fruits are like 2-3".
