Re: De-icer as desiccant

Good call. Apparently drywall is also very similar, all you have to do is crush it and dry it in the oven.

DRY WALL!??
Now way, dry wall is Calcium Carbonate, I think, the same as chalk and sea shells. That wouldn't work very well as a desiccant at all.
De-icer is the same stuff as Damp-rid.

schlomo - you don't read very well, I said "apparently". I read about the drywall on another shroom page, and haven't tried it myself. However, anyone knows that anything dry, powdered or otherwise will work fine as a dessicant, when it is wet you just dry it out again, try it sometime. Even something simple like dry rice works as a dessicant.

Secondly, damp rid isn't calcium chloride, it's 90% anhydrous calcium sulfate, get it right.

Oh yeah schlomo, almost forgot. Calcium Sulphate is the very same as the naturally occuring element gypsum. Ever heard of gypsum board (AKA DRYWALL!), guess not...

dirtydog, ok, you are right. sorry to have been rude.
Yes I am aware of the fact that you can use any dry substance as a desiccant (like rice grains in the salt shakers at a Chinese restaurant). I also am familiar with gypsum board.
So Damp-Rid is actually gypsum minus the water molecule(s), huh? I thought I remembered using Damp-rid, but it must have been a dfferent brand that contained calcium chloride.
I just wanted to suggest the possibility of using de-icer as a desiccant. That's all... got lost in my own zeal, I guess.
