The Dead Kennedys initiated one of the most divine segments of my life

I was 16 and the Dead Kennedys were my favorite band. I don't much agree with their politics anymore but when I first discovered them it was like how a born-again Christian must feel. The music was the anti-thesis of the garbage that was on MTV. This was a band that was angry yet political, rebellious, witty, and viciously intelligent. Their lyrics were my bible and their music constantly played on my stereo.

First band I ever saw live was Dead Kennedys. I was 13 years old. It was 1981. They remain, to this day, my favorite punk band.
Also, I posted a while back in MAL about how a Dead Kennedys song changed my life. The post (with the song uploaded) is here.

It was so cool how they could criticize the punk scene so maliciously. That kind of self-criticism hit the mark and I still see it to this day. A lot of punk kids are more concerned with how many studs they have in their jackets and how much they can pose. Their supposed beliefs usually fall by the wayside and they become as conformist as the people they constantly bitch about. I call it "conforming to rebellion".
Good song by the way.

the first punk album I listened to was "Out come the Wolves" by NOFX. that album is still great, IMO.
I never got into DK, granted I never listened to much of them, but I never really liked the whole spastic, chaotic, noise/bad vocals. Cheetah, from the band the dead boys sometimes comes in and has a beer with my buddy, and I just sit back and listen to the stories of the NYC punk scene developing at CBGB's and such... even though I find their music unbearable.

I never much got into the pop-punk of the 90's. "Punk in Drublic" and "Ribbed" have their moments however. The only pop-punk band I could listen to with any regularity was Propagandhi.
I'm more of an 80's Hardcore guy. I'm really into the Dwarves right now.

Oh man, can the Dwarves rock!
The Misfits and the Dead Kennedys were my life-transforming bands. I never followed DK too much, hell I only own one cd, but seriously they were the band that made me realize I need to give a fuck about the world.
One night during a full-out punken drinking session in an abandoned house, my friend's cousin and I tried to get it on, but well we were both a bit sloppy and plastered, so my other friend wrote with a sharpie on this bedroom door "Too drunk to fuck!" So true.... and I'm glad it turned out that way
Anti-flag was also a pretty formative band that I got into for a bit. Shucks, now they blow.
Hardcore is the best punk out there.

I used to be WAY into Minor Threat and Mission of Burma. I credit the early harcore scene with my turn to psychedelics. For better or worse, that fucking music changed my life.

They're from Pittsburgh and I saw them a bunch of times. Some of my friends were in bands that played shows with them. Now they tour the country and they are rarely back here.

Agreed for the most part. Minor Threat is just so much more primal and unrelenting.
The Argument and Steady Diet are two of my alltime favorite albums, though...

Oh, I've got all of 'em man.
To me, though... Fugazi's agro side will just never live up to Minor Threat.
The Fug is far more appealing to me in melodic form.

Fuck yeah. I didn't listen to music as a kid until I hit grade 8 because I hated everything I had heard on the radio and MTV up until that point (Except like the Chili Peppers and a few other things) but I played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and the soundtrack blew me away. Things like Dead Kennedys, The Vandals, and Suicidal Tendencies became my favourite bands at the time and to this day I'm still into punk. Holiday In Cambodia has to be one of the best songs I've ever heard even now.

i could never stand jello biafras voice. i used to listen to a lot of old school punk back when i was in my early teens, but now i listen to some of those songs and it really is painful to my ears. there are some i still do enjoy though such as:
-all hell breaks loose by misfits -1977 by clash -bombshell by op ivy -this bud's for me by screeching weasel -orgasm addict by buzzcocks -straight edge & filler by minor threat
i cant remember this song but its by screeching weasel, it goes something like: everything they say do you know its all a lie they lie to me, they lie to you and ________ the reasons why i dont want to know, i dont want to care, something something something lets drop the bomb, lets drop the bomb, lets drop the bomb this time
also i realize this is new-age neo-punk, but i do like the decline by nofx. yeah yeah, kiss my ass.

I still love DK. My favorite album is "Plastic Surgery Disasters/In God We Trust Inc." Yeah, I know that's actually an album and an EP together, but they've been released on one disk since I've been into them.
I met Jello Biafra in 2000 in WV. He had a Q&A and I asked him if he thought that psychedelic drugs were the next step in human evolution. He said something to the effect of "No, I do not think that. Take a look at all of the burned out hippies from the sixties" I knew he wouldn't agree, but I wanted to hear his opinion on it anyway.

makes me feel better knowing i'm not that only one who thought that when i was a teenager (i also don't much agree with their politics anymore). they definitely transformed my life at the time when i was listening to them constantly, and even to this day. they are, to this day, still my favourite punk band though.

No, drugs generally attract two kinds of people: The very smart and the very dumb.
They make the dumb feel smart, and the smart feel almost normal....which is pretty fucked up for some of us.

While Jello hates deadbeat hippies, he doesn't think people should be arrested for drug use. He's written a few anti drug war songs with his side project Lard. Drug Raid at 4am and I Wanna Be A Drug Sniffing Dog are 2 that come to mind. Btw, I love DK.
