3 Liter water bottle terrarium
    #7398235 - 09/11/07 08:02 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Anybody ever had any luck with 3-liter bottles of anysort? Its the smallest possible terrarium i feel confident about but if that plastic makes it extra smelly, i dont know if its safe to grow (im doing so in secrecy). Also, with a one cake terrarium of that size is it very likely for contamination to grow if im fanning once a day? Do i even need to fan once a day? Is doing this even worth it? Ive got BRF, Vermiculite, Perlite, syringe/spores (puerto rican cubensis), ingredients for a disinfecting/sanitizing spray (bleach+water (10:1)), ability to sterilize with boiling water in pot and pan (not a pressure cooker) and a heat pad for temparature regulation in a small corner of my room behind a dresser and bed. If anybody has any doubts about this low-maintenance system please let me know. Also let me know if u think i may b overreacting.

hey,
I havn't done it, but apparently alot of people have had success with 2 or 3L bottles, it's called the "poor mans terrarium" basically cut the bottle in half, put a little pre-moistened (sp?) perlite in the bottom, and your cake ontop, and put the lid back on. too easy! You arn't going to get the results that you could get using other methods, but you should get enough for you, if you shroom very rarely. Maybe think of a little 10L container from a $2 shop and do 2 or 3 cakes inside that, wouldn't be much bigger, and probably less noticable (especially if it"s hidden) then say a couple coke bottles or water bottles etc. Goodluck!

maybe a makeshift casing?

fill the bottom of the three liter with a little verm on bottom to make a flat surface, place in the solitary cake, and verm on top?

i did a casing much like the 9er tek, except for a terrarium i used a plastic grocery bag.  the casing meant no messing with perlite and such, and a plastic bag with the handles tied to each other at the top didnt look at all suspicious.  I opened it up twice  a day and misted when needed, and got a very decent flush. wish i had pics :frown:  as soon as i get settled and get a spore print i'll be sure to do it again.

but there's always a creative way around every problem, so think a bit on it and good luck!

PS: this isnt to say your idea wont work.  in all probability, you'll have a decent result.  But after I did casings, i cant imagine ever doing cakes again, even when compared to a simple all-verm casing.

I don't know exactly how much room you have to work with but you may want to consider getting a 10 gallon aquarium. They don't take up much space and you can fit more than one cake at a time in them. If the aquarium won't work for you look around at hardware and department stores. You may be able to find a rubber maid container or something similar that will fit in your space. Also you may be able to find something at a nursery or gardening supply store that will work.
