I don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but I had a very similar fungi growing on grass/soil substrate as well. My first though were puffballs, but when I tried to break them open I found they were solid, and meaty. The inside was a dark purple, and the outside was a somewhat dark grayish-purple. Any idea what that could be? They were pretty interesting to find, and their shape and base are almost identical to the puffballs I've found.
*EDIT: I'm stupid his look solid and meaty too, but most puffballs I find are hollow with spores. So are the kind of puffballs I found edible, and can I pick them and cook them up (oooh I love the thought of picking and cooking my own mushrooms :>)?

Puffballs possessing dark interiors should be avoided.

Okay. Thank for enlightening me on that. Is that the only key on puffballs for whether to ignore them or not, or are there other signs of possible inedibility?
