Yeah, when you talk to bulk growers you will see that they will use spent over fresh. Keeps cost down. I am a coffee drinker so I would rather use spent.
So If I have a small project going and no grounds, I'll make a pot of coffee, drink some or throw it in the fridge for iced, hydrate coir with it and use or save the grounds.
If your just making a small tin then you could use fresh and the cost is minimal.

what does everybody think?
you can use it in whatever ratio you want. I've used it 60:40 coir:ucg (used coffee grounds) rather effectively and RR's has made cakes out of 100% used coffee grounds before - to illustrate a point.
However, as with all things the more diverse the food source, the healthier the mycelium will be because there'll generally be a rich set of micro-nutrients in the food. I make homemade compost for that reason...which I then still cut 50/50 with coir because it helps fluff up the substrate and prevent compaction.
I will note however, that when I'm talking about diverse food sources, I'm not referring to organic/synthetic fertilizers. Mycelium consumes/devours it's food just like humans do and cannot really benefit from liquid nutrient sources. To some extent, blood/bonemeal are the same in this regard.
A good analogy to help explain this concept would be if you were to consider if a human could survive on vitamin pills alone. While all the nutrients are there, we need to "consume" it to be of real benefit.

the pH of spent coffee grounds (espressed) falls right about 6.5 to 7.0
the sticker that starbucks applies to their bags gives a brief synopsis of all this, including pH levels, and how it can be used (minus our hobby of course).

ok so I visited 2 starbucks stores today... this is the synopsis
I called the 2 stores before I went...
One store said they would save it for me and when I got there they had about 15-20 cups of ground coffee waiting for me, which was cool
the other store said I had to come in person I gave them my phone # and they said they would start saving it and call me when its time to come pick it up... 2-4 weeks I am guessing this will be at least 1 full garbage bag full
so there you go... if you are interested... my best advice would be to give your closest starbucks a call...
thanks everybody

So... it is safe to say that spawning to a coir/coffee ground mix is a good, successfully performed way to do bulk. How do you more experienced cultivators feel about putting this spawned coir into a monotub? Or into invitro bags?

How do I feel about coir+coffee in tubs?

Three thumbs up, that's how!

If I could get poo I would use it without even mixing with coir,Ive done poo/straw,never poo and coir, with coir I would use coffee grounds or castings....maybe an experiment and add some of each to boost up the nutes
I don't really like poo and its not easy for me to get, thats why I started using coir in the 1st place,I'm guessing between the coffee and the worm castings the coir wouldn't be all that far away from poo in quality,I usually throw away after 2 or 3 flushes anyway to clear up the real estate for new projects

i see, would a mixture of coir/coffee/straw for a substrate work? or is that too much stuff into one substrate? think it would work? it may add more nutes, thus its beneficial for the shrooms your imputes are very helpful

I think it should work just fine,in fact I'm guessing with the moisture holding ability of both straw and coir that it would yield some gigantic mushrooms. You may not get all that many flushes but I'm betting the first few will kickass
