Additives for Coir?

I am doing a coir grow and I have read in several posts that blood meal and coffee are good additives for coir.
But how much blood meal should I use for say.. 4 hydrated cups of coir.
Also, how much coffee should I add to say... 4 cups of hydrated coir?
I know nitrogen level should be 3.7% and that is my objective...
thanks for help!

I looked into blood meal and its 12% nitrogen..seems like a lot..next to it there was some seewead extract .015% I believe,,I think that would be much better..for now im using coffee grounds though 1/2 cup to 2quarts of coir

i wouldnt use bloodmeal for nitrogen, mainly because of what it is and where its from.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodmeal
as such, i find coffee works wonders, and is natural. good sources are coffee shops, namely starbucks...find the busiest one in town, call them up, and ask for 'grounds for my garden'...they all have this program, or will know wtf is up when you say that, and they'll either have some on hand already bagged and ready to go, or will start saving them for you.

the spent coffee from coffee shops is about near neutral in pH. even so, mushroom mycelium actually prefers a slightly acidic pH, close to 5.5 or 6 or so, but so do contaminations.

I just came back from Dunkin Donuts and I asked for coffee grounds and they looked at me like I was a Martian...
I was real adamant about it and they finally gave it to me reluctantly.... but its a very little amount... not even 4 cups is what they gave me...
I guess I will try starbucks tomorrow..

I was doing some research on the starbucks site
it seems like some of there "social responsibilities" includes giving out free ground coffee
http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/compost.asp
I guess all companys are trying to seem like they are enviornmentally friendly nowadays with global warming going on and such...

I use 1/2 cup coffee and 1/4 cup blood meal to 4 cups coir, and it works great.
You can get coffee grounds from starbucks, or from your friends. Lots of people put coffee grounds into garden soil, it's a very normal thing.

starbucks gives away all the used coffee grounds free. just ask them about their "grounds for gardens" policy.

Since brewed coffee is acidic, it seems like the spent grounds will be less acidic than unused dry grounds. Mushrooms like acidic conditions, but so does trich. Neutral-to-slightly-basic pH reduces trich growth. So it's probably not strictly necessary, but likely to be a good idea.
But I haven't done a controlled test. Maybe somebody will do it and post pics.

There is one starbucks that is not "out of my way" that I will stop at later today... I feel really hyped up at the moment... I hope suspense lives up to the expectations... 60 lbs of ground coffee?!?! I could find a home for that!

thats a good question.... is there any shroomerite out there that has used coffee straight out of the container successfully? If so, please chime in! Somebody mentioned earlier that it has to be leached...
thanks for the inputs... and I will let everybody know how starbucks goes later!

BTW I read somebody using 80% coir/ 20% ground coffee with much success... that is going to be the ratio I want to work with...
what does everybody think?

Yeah I kept 30 lbs of it. Small apartment and they are wet so they need to be dried or frozen or else mold will grow.
I guess you could use fresh but thats a waste of coffee. Fress unless you are getting it for free costs money. Spent does not.
