Pressure Cooker and Liquid Culture
    #7396857 - 09/11/07 03:18 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

i will pressure cook my baby bottles of nutrient solution for 20 minutes at 15 psi, so my question is, what are the chances of caramelizing the honey while it reaches the 15 psi? my pressure cook takes time to reach 15 psi, so im afraid of caramelizing, so whatr do u suggest people?

I suggest you worry too much.

Just do it. Everyone's PC takes time to reach pressure.
No worries.

In my experience, the best way to produce a clean, particulate free solution is to use very hot water. I always run my dry liquid culture ingredients through my coffee maker. The hot water seems to give the best dilution.

If you do not own a coffee maker you could try this:

1. Boil 4-8 cups of water in a pot.
2. Have your dry liquid culture ingredients measured and inside of 2 coffee filters. I use 10 grams of light malt extract and 10 grams of dextrose per 4 cups of water using quart jars.
3. Take your coffee filters and slightly push them down into the jar.
4. Using a rubber band, wrap the outside of the jar so the filters do not fall in when you pour your water.
5. Pour your boiling water into the coffee filter as it sits inside the top of the jar by swirling the water around to catch all the ingredients.
6. After you have poured the desired amount into each jar, place the lids back on that you will use and cover with foil.
7. Pressure cook one time at 15 PSI for 20-25 minutes.
8. Allow them to cool, with the foil on, for at least 3-4 hours outside of the pressure cooker.
9. Leave the foil on until you are ready to inoculate.

Using this method ensures that only the diluted ingredients enter the jar.

I followed this advice and have been particulate free. It's a good outline.

thanks for your replys, now im thinking about to skip the liquid culture part and inject the spores straight to the jars of pop corn, i used a spore serynge two weeks ago and they didnt germinate, and im afraid of failing now because i only have one spore print, what do u think? if they colonize then i can use the grains to colonize other jars.

sorry for my english :stoned:

Make some LC in addition to putting spores into jars.
If you have the equipment, do some agar also.
Everything you can do increases the chance that something will work.

(Your English is fine)
