Once steam started to escape, did you put any type of weight or guage on? Sounds like you're missing something. You're supposed to put the lid on and wait until steam starts to escape from the guage/weight nozzle. Then put your weight/guage on. When it comes up to 15 psi. or starts to rock (if a weight), start timing. (If it's a weight type, you shoud turn down the heat until it rocks 1-3 times per minute)
