T. Pachanoi -Other Alkaloids?-
    #7396006 - 09/11/07 12:00 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I've read some articles and old usenet posts in refferral to other active alkaloids in San Pedro. I'm kinda curious if anyone knows what the other alkaloids are and the approximate range of potency.

Alkaloids
San Pedro contains a number of psychoactive alkaloids, including the well-studied chemical mescaline (0.21 - 1.8%), and also 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenethylamine, 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine, anhalonidine, anhalinine, hordenine, tyramine, and 3-methoxytyramine.

Thanks alot, I can't believe I over looked that... drrr...

Well here's some at a glance info on the alkaloids:

  • 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine
Inactive, or active past 1gram. (PIHKAL)
  • 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenethylamine
Intravenous administration to rats of the aqueous extract of the soft coralNephthea sp. caused an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. The cardioactive constituent was isolated and shown to be 3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenethylamine. (http://www.springerlink.com/content/p14q647712h417w0/)
  • 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine
Metabolite of Mescaline. (Medical Toxicology, Richard C. Dart)
  • 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine
    Effects unknown.

Well thats the short list at a glance...

i bet not many people have looked into the quantity of the other alkaloids in cacti, maybe some.
most analysis ive read seems to concentrate on mescaline, for obvious reasons.
trouts notes might have some additinal info hiding away in the archives... but

Hmmm... It's good to know about the rest of the chemicals in cacti. The phenylthylamines are a very interesting family of chemicals.
