    #7395106 - 09/11/07 04:32 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

so its happened before, and it happened today. Im typing up a post and then when i hit enter, im greeted with the ping pong game. but the post i submited didn't go through

so i was wondering if their would be a way to remedy this little problem.

i hit the back button but the text was no longer their.

thx

I've never had this happen. Have you tried clearing your browser history and cache? Also, try ctrl-z the next time the text isn't there... sometimes it works for me pulling lost text from the void... and sometimes, it doesn't work.

The problem is that if we leave the forums open for business during the nightly backup we get a queue of thousands of queries, and that starts a positive feedback loop where it slows down trying to serve them all, and the slowness causes more queries to get backed up, and it slows down even further.... eventually it recovers, but there's much less downtime if we just close the board while the table is locked. The thing is, alternative solutions (like lowering the query timeout, or just leaving things to sort themselves out) won't work any better since you'll just get a blank page instead of Curveball. However, if you have automatic post backup enabled in your preferences, you should be able to hit back, reload, and you'll get the most recent copy of your post from before the backup started.

Although on further reflection I can think of a way around it, but how often do you encounter this problem and now that you're aware of the post backup workaround is that an acceptable solution?

i was joking, hence the :smirk:

but seriously, the boards are pretty dead at that time anyway.

that's also 3-4am PST. at least, 3am or thereabouts is the time i get Curveball at, and i'm in California, so yeah. it's gonna be different for the people in other timezones, but whatever. the boards are still pretty dead around that time no matter where you are.

well i do have backup enabled, says "1 min". I hit the back button but I didn't hit reload, ill try that next time.

i dunno if you just want ot leave it how it is or not but i have some idea's ill throw out.

maybe have a red light next to our "mail notification", when the server goes down the red light turns on?

other idea is, when server is down your post gets transfered to the ping pong page so you can copy it.

its not a big problem i can live with it, just frustrating the few times it does happen.

anyways thanks for listening
