Heineken minikegs.
    #7394007 - 09/10/07 09:33 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I picked up one of those minikegs tonight. (warm) It says on the directions that it takes about 10 hours to chill off to optimum temp in the fridge. I tossed it in the cellar freezer. About how long do you think I should leave it in there to chill it off to where it'd be decent enough to drink?

I have no idea, but let me know how that fucker is. I imagine it would be awesome to bring them to parties instead of 30 racks.

I love those things

Last time I bought one, I duct taped freezer pouches to it.  Cooled down as I drank it.

It's not a great deal, but it's a good gimmick

Put it in a tub of ice, water, and salt. That will cool it the fastest

So do you think it should be fine to drink about an hour and a half in the freezer and then moved to the fridge? I don't care if it's not too cold I just don't want it to be piss warm.

Yeah it isn't the best deal price wise but I've been wanting to try Heineken draught for a while now. Is it much better than the bottled Heineken?

I've got buckets and coolers. The problem is I don't have a bag of ice, or enough ice in the freezer to chill it off with. I don't have one of those nice ice makers on my freezer. :frown: I've only got two small trays of ice.

Salt lowers the freezing point of water allowing the water to get colder than the ice. That's why they salt roads and such, so the ice melts, not because it gets warmer but because it has a lower freezing point.

Ah.
We used that concept to make ice cream in some class once. Only problem was salt ended up getting in the ice cream and it tasted like shit.

Matt: You shouldn't need too much ice to make that work, by the way.

It isnt the best deal price wise, I think it comes to what ~14 beers?

I bought one about 1,5 months ago and the fucker basically exploded and leaked beer constantly even though it was chilled.

LMAO!

The water can't possibly "get colder than the ice". :rofl2:

It can, however, it can be AS cold and completely touching all of the surface of the keg with the help of a little salt.

That's why it's used in ice cream makers.

Heineken and Becks are the two most likely beers I know of to get "skunked". This happens when they have been cooled, warmed and re-cooled.

Chances are, you've only experienced SKUNKED Heineken in the first place.

No wonder you hate it! Wait 'til you get a FRESH one! You'll change your tune.

Yeah I've only had one 12 pack of Heineken that wasn't skunked out of the many that I've bought. Don't get me wrong though, I actually enjoy the mild skunk flavor. However thats not how it's supposed to taste. The one 12 I got that wasn't skunked was delicious. Not the best beer on earth by any means but it was a hell of a lot better than skunked Heineken thats for sure.

acyl.. it's not the best beer on the planet. it's good.. but certainly not the best like TM is proclaiming it to be.

like jew said, it's all completely subjective. personally, my favorite is magic hat number 9 from draft.

You're better off buying it warm (unless you know your Heineken and your vendor).

The only skunked ones I've had have been pre-cooled (apparently at least twice).

You never know if someone fucked up or if there was a malfunction with the cooler.

Blue Moon yes because it's easily accessible. But Blue Moon is honestly bad when it comes to Belgian Whites. And to those who call it a girly beer I tell them to drink it. It tastes good, and there's really nothing girly about it at all. Just leave the orange out if you want, it still tastes fucking good.

As was said, taste is subjective.

Heineken, Becks, Grolsch and St. Pauli Girl are all VERY similar lagers. I prefer Heineken.

I also love Killian's Irish Red on tap. One of the best ales out there!

ew. i hate the orange peel-blue moon combo. i'd rather drink microbrew. Great White Pale Ale is awwwwesome.

how much beer is in one of those little buggers anyway?

oh dude, it's definitely tasty. and i like the orange slice in it. it really adds to the flavor. i'll definitely enjoy it with dinner or chilling at home.. but if i'm out at the bars i don't usually get it.

It's pretty much all I ever get at bars. Either that or Killians. Maybe a Yuengling here or a Guiness there, but almost always Blue Moon.
And whiskey.
Nothing starts a night off better at a bar than a shot of Wild Turkey and a pint of Blue Moon or Guinness. Now that I think about it I get Guinness more than Yuengling or Killians when I'm out.

i generally do a glass or two of bourbon and coke or redbull and vodka, then a decent beer or two like magic hat or yuengling, then onto the cheap bud lights.

For anybody picking up a warm mini keg for the first time: 1 hour and 15 minutes in the freezer standing upright and then another half hour in the fridge is perfect. It's nice and cold. :yesnod: This tastes like draft you'd get out at the bar, it's great fucking beer. The carbonation is perfect and a nice medium head on it after it's first poured. There's definitely a big difference between this and bottled Heineken. Note: There's no skunk flavor what-so-ever.

If a beer tastes good to you why should you let your perception of it as "girly" stop you from drinking it?

It would seem that you're in the minority opinion. You too have probably only had "skunked" Heineken.

Quote:

For Heineken, the tradition is different. Heineken is a brilliant example of the thinking that made the Dutch a minor world
power in the 17th and 18th centuries. Faced with a small country surrounded by sometimes hostile neighbors that had invaded
numerous times, the Dutch took to the seas and the rivers to trade, and built a rich empire. In that spirit, Gerard Adriaan
Heineken purchased an operating brewery and built it into an exporting giant.

Today, Heineken is the world's second largest brewery. Dan Tearno, VP of Corporate Affairs for Heineken USA, told me another fact
that I found even more interesting. "Heineken sells more beer outside its home country than any other brewer. It is sold in over
170 countries. It is the most international brand in the world." Through purchases of national breweries, Heineken is now the
largest brewer in Italy and Poland, and when its purchase of Cruzcampo goes through, it will be the largest brewer in Spain. And
you thought it was just Dutch!

Heineken's demographic base in the US is about as broad as the beer's world market. With a history of US importation going back to
1894, and 66 straight years of post-Repeal imports, Heineken has built strong position of familiarity here. Dan Tearno talks of
the brand's broad appeal with pride. "Our demographics are very broad. We have a very strong Caucasian franchise, but we're strong
in the African-American and Latino demographics as well. Regionally, we're strongest in the northeast."

On the shelf, Heineken is priced more like a microbrew than a domestic light beer. Faced with the choice, why would a consumer
pick Heineken? "Not to put too fine a point on it," says Tearno, "but we've been brewed with pride since 1873. That's a little
better than "brewed with pride since 1988." It's a deserved reputation for high quality and dependability. Freddie Heineken says a
bad bottle of Heineken is a personal insult. We have as high-quality a group of production people as any other brewery in the
world. And we have the A-yeast, a proprietary strand first isolated in 1873 by a student of Louis Pasteur, that we're still using
today."

Mention Heineken this year, of course, and anyone in the beer biz will immediately blurt out "Corona's bigger now!" That's true in
the US, though Heineken remains quite comfortably larger in the world market. But it overlooks the fact that while Corona may have
overtaken Heineken's long-held spot as the best-selling imported beer in America, the Dutch Treat is still growing at a rapid
pace. Dan Tearno again: "The brand is growing strongly in the metro areas. It's less-developed in the west, but that's the
fastest-growing region in the country right now for Heineken sales. Every region is growing, but they've got a higher percentage
growth. Heineken USA is growing at an accelerating pace."

That says a lot for the brand, considering Corona's strength with the growing Latino demographic. The rising import beer tide is
lifting everyone's boats, and while one brand may lift more than another for a while, no one is hurting. Certainly not Heineken
USA, according to Tearno. "If you look back over last year's profits, we grew 29%, and we grew 7% in volume." Not too shabby by
any standards.

Since when does "best-selling" necessarily mean something's good? There's plenty of crap cranked off assembly lines daily.

Best tasting beer I've ever had, bar none.
