Mexicana A in Philospher's Bag*completed*
    #736237 - 07/10/02 09:12 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Log of sclerotia formation of Psilocybe mexicana (Strain A) in a Spore Works' Philospher's Bag.

Day 0 - 7/1/02

Uninoculated Philospher's Bag - Consistancy is like modeling clay and appears to consist mostly of rice. Syringe passed through the injection port and easily into the substrate. When the inoculate was added it flowed out of the substrate and into the space between the substrate block and the bag. I used a full 10 cc syringe since I had it available and I wanted to speed things up. A few spots of growth on the surface of the substrate were visible in 4 days at 85F and quickly spread. It reminds me of mycelium growing on the surface of an agar plate.

Day 9 - 7/10/02

Growth is looking good but is showing in only the areas where the inoculate flowed around in the bag and on top. Existing growth is healthy but no sclerotia is forming. It looks like a good time to mix the substrate.

This stuff is thick and it feels exactly like modeling clay. Its a bit difficult to mix in the bag which hasn't inflated much since inoculation. With a bit of effort I was able to get it mixed up and formed back into a mass. I didn't compact it as much as was before.

Day 14 - 7/15/02

Completely white with tiny sclerotia just starting to appear. I am moving it to room temperature inside a paper grocery sack.

Day 38 - 8/9/02

Stones looking good so far.

As I understand it the Mexicana strain was gathered by Gordon Wasson. Do you know the differences between the Mexicana strains and their ID's? I have wondered about this for a while now.

Psilocybe mexicana is a species. Any of the original P. mexicana strains that may have been collected by Wasson are likely lost or degenerated beyond use. The currently circulating strains are newly isolated from a wild collection. P. mexicana shouldn't be confused with mexican strains of cubensis or other species.

The "A" is just a laboratory designation to keep it distinguished from other strains and has no other significance. The A and B strains were isolated from dried mushroom caps collected in Mexico by AIRDOG. The collection is pictured below and labeled to show the origin of each strain. The remaining caps are in cold storage for later work.

I have noticed that the "A" strain is worked w/ more than the "B" strain, is there a reason for this?

In reply to:

i believe the "A" strain has better sclerotia forming ability and the "B" strain has better fruiting.

Workman: Cool..we need more sclerotia grow logs...Im going to follow this post, also I'm very interested in the philosophers bags, thinking about purchasing a couple myself.

i think they use rye grass seed as a substrate for producing sclerotia.

I don't know about the mixing. Maybe you shouldn't. But you are incubating at too high of temperature for quality sclerotia. I am incubating at 85F just until I see the start of sclerotia (to speed full colonization) and then lower the temperature to room temps 68-72F by bringing it into the kitchen. I just put them in a brown paper bag on a shelf and leave them alone. I have noticed that overly high temps causes excessive buildup of metabolites (yellow mycelium piss) and that can't be good.

Here is a recipe that takes advantage of the nutlike texture and taste of fresh sclerotia. I recommend weighing the amount of sclerotia used in the recipe for dosage estimation per bar.

Workman?s No Bake Chewy Chocolate Sclerotia Bars

Makes 4 dozen
Prep Time: 20 Minutes Ready in: 16 Hours 40 Minutes

Ingredients
1 cup corn syrup
3/4 cup peanut butter
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups quick-cooking oats
1 3/4 cups coarsely chopped fresh sclerotia

Directions
1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the corn syrup, peanut butter and chocolate chips. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Continue to boil for 5 minutes.

2. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla, oats and sclerotia. Turn onto a well greased 10x15 inch jellyroll pan or any cookie sheet with 1 inch sides. When cool enough to touch, grease your hands and pat the mixture down flat in the pan.

3. Refrigerate overnight. Let stand for 20 minutes before cutting into squares.

That wouldn't happen to be the recipe for the "Chocolate Starfish" bars of shrooms that are going around this area would it? A couple of friends of mine have bought these chocolate bars that have some type of psilocybin in them(shrooms or scleoita, I don't know)... 1 bar is around a level 2-3 trip and they are 25 bucks a pop.

Updated above. I thought it would be tighter if I just edited my original post to keep all the pictures together. The stones don't show up that well in the pictures but they are there in abundance. None are very big yet, most are like small peas. You can see them best from the bottom where the plastic is pressed tightly to the substrate.
