nicotiana rustica potency help

I grew a rustica plant under 80watts of fluoros, 18 hours on 6 off. I've seen pics of them in the wild growing up to maybe 4 feet and about 2 or 3 feet wide at the base with huge fan leaves. well mine grew about a foot tall and started flowering so I harvested the seeds and leaves. I read that letting the leaves dry in the open in a dark place will make the most potent but harshest smoke, which is what I did. however, my smoke isn't potent at all. I roll a fat joint of leaf with a little mint leaf sprinkled in, and I only catch a buzz like a normal cigg, maybe less of. it was nothing like the "one hit wonder" that rustica leaf is supposed to produce.
so what did I do wrong?

I also find that strange. From what I've read rustica should be really strong. I myself has grown some Nicotiana tabacum outdoors and that seems pretty potent. Perhaps there was a problem with to little light, but I doubt it, if it was big and green it should have been enough.
What nutes did you use? Tobacco is really good at depleting soil. It might have been nitrogen deficiency that was the bad guy.

it could've been light, maybe it needs full sun, but the leaves were very green and it grew reeally fast. gave it plenty of water, it would suck the water up bone dry every other day. I used a 24-8-16 nutes, so 24% nitrogen, once a week, mixed with superthrive. the soil used was miracle-gro potting mix, so it was already nutrient rich.

Yeah, they do seem to like floros.. I'm at a loss, might have been the genetics of the individual plant but I doubt it... Maybe some trace substance was missing but that shouldn't be possible either with good nutes. Strange...

Whoops...
I think its the lighting honestly...
If it was outside I would imagine it would have more potency...

maybe its just an outside plant? mine started flowering at 6 weeks and was about 1 foot and 1/2.
I read something before about harvesting when the leaves start to turn yellow which will be about when it starts flowering, however mine were still bright green even after 3 weeks of flowering.

Might be, I've never read about one cultivated indoors and then going trough drying/curing before(probably just because I haven't really looked).

Same with mine(U just harvested a few leaves the plant is pretty huge), It is still mostly green and it is in it's second month of flower/seeding.

anyone else grow tobacco indoors??
I'm guessing it just needs to be outdoors. I had all the other factors perfect... huge pot, lots of light for long hours, plenty of water and nutes, a little stress here and there, 50-70% rh, 80-85F. seems like the only thing being left out is mother nature.
or, maybe since I had the lights on for 18 hours it sped up vegetation and went straight to flowering within 6 weeks, which it should take way longer than that.. I get maybe 13-15 hours of daylight which is a huge difference. maybe the plant just needs to be more mature to up its nicotine content.
hmmm...

I grow mine outdoors and they have no problems. I'm not really a smoker, but I can say that there is a big difference. I haven't tested it against HG tabacum though.
I find that growing them in containers or crowding them will cause them to stay small (although they will still flower at any size.) Perhaps the container you used is why they never got as big as you hoped.
As for catching peak potency, I've read that drying them as quick as possible is the best way. I've tried all sorts of ways, but never really done a comparative test. Also, if you cut off the flowering tops you will get more and bigger leaves, which would allow you to get more leaf even thought the plants were smaller than you'd hoped.
