From Kissing Suzy Kolber
FOXBORO, Mass. -- New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick today defended his controversial warrantless wiretapping program in a combative press conference, calling the practice "an essential tool in the war on other teams."
"Those who would criticize this program simply fail to understand the state of the league as it exists today," Belichick said, following six minutes of inscrutable mumbling. "There are teams out there that hate our way of life, our way of winning and are bent on defeating us. We must take any and all measures to avoid that outcome."
Privacy experts and league officials have decried the practice as an unlawful invasion of personal rights. New York Jets rookie cornerback Darrelle Revis said, "This is a disgusting, unconstitutional act that borders on the Orwellian." He then added, "Fuck."
Yesterday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell determined that Belichick violated league policy when he authorized the FBI to tap the phones of the coaches of the other 31 NFL teams, as well as a few married women he was creeping with. The league also found he had installed a computer chip inside the brain of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning that causes him to see visions of M.C. Escher drawings.
Goodell said the Patriots could be fined multiple draft picks, likely a total cop-out with all the picks coming in the second day of the draft, as well as docking Patriots quarterback Tom Brady one weekly media suck-off. The Patriots immediately appealed the ruling and Brady pumped his fist menacingly in the direction of Goodell.
"The last thing this league needs is an activist commissioner trying to legislate from his cushy Manhattan office," Belichick bristled. "If we are to maintain stability in this sport, it is imperative that the New England Patriots maintain its status as the lone power atop the NFL. If not, upstart teams like the Jets could plunge the league into chaos and we could find ourselves in a world where we wouldn't know who would win the Super Bowl before the season even started."

That's funny.
In reality though, it's pretty widely known that lots of teams have done and still do stuff like this. Teams have stolen each others playbooks, crap like that. The Patriots got caught and look like assholes now, and they will no doubt be made an example of. But really - I think they're good enough to beat any team without this kind of crap. I don't think this takes away from the seasons that they played incredibly and won super bowls, because when it comes down to it, the players on the field and their athleticism won the games, nothing else. I'm still very disappointed in them though, and hope that they will think never pull this stunt again in the future.

you never know though...
recording and tracking defensive signals is a pretty frickin big advantage.
It basically means your offense knows where the coverages and blitz will be coming from. It's like playing Madden against someone whose already chosen their defensive play.
If all this shit is true, it very well could take away alot of credibility from the patriot's dynasty.

word i have to agree with LiquidSmoke. I disagree that every team does it as well, the pats are notorious for this and have already been accused once and possibly more than once. the packers are claiming they did it and also the lions might now be claiming they did it to them too.
lets see how they do now without their *special* halftime adjustments.

Actually they haven't been accused once. They caught this same guy taping on the sidelines before, but after reviewing the tape there wasn't ANYTHING against the rules on it - he was just taping the game itself. He just forgot to have his special "vest" on that identified him as a member of the organization or whatever.
Like I said before, I'm disappointed that they've done this, and I'm not making excuses for them - but lots of teams DO do this. The NFL allows taping of the games, just not taping of the coaches on the opposite teams. I think it's pretty safe to say that in most tapes the coaches are going to appear somewhere, whether the person with the camera meant to focus on them or not.

I'm sure that wishful thinking is flying all over the Boston area but outside the candle-pin bowling alleys, no one's going to buy it.

looks like the Patriots may have been using these tactics during their superbowls as well.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3017964
"Every time the Eagles rushed Brady in the Super Bowl, the Patriots nullified the defensive attack with screen passes. Lots of them. On almost every play defensive coordinator Jim Johnson called for a blitz, the Patriots used the short pass to confuse the Eagles."

They still can't beat the Broncos and that's all that matters...

Yesterday I called to give my patriots fan friend some shit and he replied witht he same shit I see people defending them with here....
"you can see the same thing from television...blah blah blah"..... well if there is no difference, then why would the patriots have kept doing this? it is obvious that it gave them an advantage in some way better than spying from the other side of the field.

what sucks about making them give up one or two picks is that it means there are one or two people that wont be going to the NFL because of that, which is unfair to them.

im not defending the patriots, but it just seems like the punishment doesnt fit the crime.
doing something like barring them from the playoffs or suspending their coach would be more appropriate.

No, just because they don't get drafted doesn't mean they won't get their chance. It just means one or two more people that would have been drafted in the 500th round won't so instead they'll just get picked up like every other undrafted free agent.

Then whoever won the Super Bowl this year would have an asterisk by their name: "New England Patriots barred from playoffs, might have won it except for douchebag of a coach."

Although I agree with the Gaper that B should have been suspended, I don't think that there have been any roster spots deleted so there will be exactly the same number of players in the NFL as otherwise. And my observation that you can get this shit of the TV is in no way a defense. They were specifically told not to do this kind of shit and they did it in a stupid way. I would have gotten away with it. Dumb, Nixonian bullshit.

i believe this "no taping the other teams sideline" rule was just made either last year or this year.. so this is why this is the first time you're ever really hearing of someone getting in trouble for this.. cause its been going on forever, just now its illegal. which i think is a good idea
anyways, i hate the pats so...
