First timer, just about 3 weeks in (Lots of pics!)
    #7391912 - 09/10/07 01:11 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all, so this is swims first time growing and they have gotten amazing results. All 6 jars are colonizing nicely with no signs of contam whatsoever, its 3 weeks in and the jars are colonizing slowly because swim does not have a constant incubation temperature, varies from 70-90 although generally stays at about 80.

The funny thing is that during innoc, swim had to remove almost every lid to innoc because the holes were not large enough for the needle.

Enjoy these pics of swims nicely colonizing jars.

This next one is probably the most promising looking myc

To hell with sterile technique, Swim sterilized in a pot on the stove, and used no alcohol, no innoc box, virtually no sterile technique and somehow ended up with this?

EDIT: But seriously i do know i should have done much more sterile technique and the only reason i dont get a pressure cooker is that i live with my rents still and they would wonder why i got a pc

BTW Do you think it is taking way too long? How much longer until birth would you say? I would appreceate any comments.

1. If you're not willing to practice sterile technique you might want to find a different hobby. You can sterilize PF jars in a pot over the stove fine but grains.....no, no, no.
2. Those are taking way too long to colonize.

good for you, you're lazy...maybe you should just go ahead and case them right now...and i wouldn't even worry about sterilizing the casing layer either...your obviously elite so it would be a waste of your time.

I got 4 jars myself and its been about a week above my PC (temps go between 80-84F .... rH: 34-45% ... its been a bit longer then a week...No PC Yet BRF Cakes but there taking off now and I give it another 3-4 days until there fully colonized...WAITING FOR MY PC! You need a pc...Dont care what you say...you need it and better to use sterile water

ok for gods sake i know i wasnt saying sterile technique was acutally useless i was just kidding.

I am very suprised these did so well and they are taking a long time so i dunno.

And yeah i know they arent ready to birth yet, i've done a LITTLE bit of reading. I was just wondering if you guys thought they were doing pretty good considering how many mistakes i made the first time...

Seriously dude i've been researching this shit for like 4 years now and i just made alot of mistakes the first time, i didnt expect to get it perfect the first time.

for the record, i'm 2 weeks into doing my first grow PF-Tek style, didn't use a glovebox or anything, just sprayed aerosol disinfectant, and flamed the needle (that i made) and a little over 2 weeks into it my cakes are just about fully colonised, healthy, and ready for the FC (but i'm leaving it another few days). I say do what everyone else is saying, read alot more man. goodluck anyway tho!

somethings not right there, 3 weeks! i thought my jars were slow. I had that growth in about 7-8 days, its about 2 weeks now and im 95%.

Give the jars a sniff.

Making mistakes the first time through is expected, but that's no excuse for getting cocky. I would recommend you sniff the jars as well... it should be that fresh, sweet, kick you in the reptile brain (I think it might only do that for me) kinda smell of fresh mushrooms. If it smells like mold at ALL then you are reaping the wages of your wretched hubris!!

But yeah, okay, slow colonization... what's with this temperature nonsense? You should keep them at a steady 84 - 86, steady being the key... crazy temperature changes tell the mushrooms that they're not underground anymore, and I'm sure they're confused enough already.

Futhermore, what proportion of water did you use? Slow colonization could mean not enough water. DON'T TRY ADDING MORE if that's the case, the mycelium networks could never survive. Try again from scratch... but don't sweet it, my first batch took a strangely long time too.

I would think considering its been 3 weeks and FAE should be presented every now and then...wouldnt the substrate have more of a chance drying out and your mycelium die if not inocced with more distilled or sterile water

you don't inoculate the substrate. You mist it.

so what should i do then?

i am not sure exactly how much water, i just watced RR's vid and did it that way - wet the verm until no more water could be held in it.

As far as constant temp, like i said its in a shoebox with a reptile light and that heats it up too much if i leave it on all night.

Anyways thanks for the advice and i'd like to state again that i was joking about being cocky and everything.

My guess is that you're not giving your mycelia enough air exchange.

Try making the four holes on your lids bigger. Use hammer and nail (sterilizing the nail before proceeding might be a good idea). The holes should be about 1/8" in diameter, that's what worked for me. !Try not touching the verm layer too much with the nail!

If you're paranoid about contams or if you haven't got a good tight-fitting dry verm layer on top of your substrate you could tape the holes up with micropore tape. Don't use tape that won't breathe!

Another, easier option is to just loosen the lids. Don't do this if your verm layer is messed up.

Also I would suggest flipping the jars upside down in order to get the CO2 out.

Read this for more information: www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?fpart=all&Board=Forum2&Number=1226637

P.S. I'm on my first grow too so this is just an unqualified guess based upon what I've read. However, two of my jars had very small holes in them too (could barely get the syringe in) and guess what, they have both halted in growth while all the others with big holes are 80-100% colonized by now (totally about 20 jars).

Good luck and keep us updated!

If your growth will get back to normal speed, I think you'll have to wait for about 2 more weeks before birthing.

Thanks man, will definately give that a shot, and as far as my next attempt goes, sterile technique all the way - at least i know where i went wrong this time.
