Computer reseting
    #7391870 - 09/10/07 12:58 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Hi shroomerites,
I've just been given a 3ghz dell PC.

Its got no drives in it at all.

I've got an IDE but no SATA drives, so I installed that...

It gets to the point where XP starts to load & then resets itself.

Any ideas?

Remove the "/fastboot" flag from the config in the boot.ini file ... easiest way is to put the drive into a system that works, edit the file, then move the drive back.  The boot.ini file is usually hidden.

This is assuming that the machine wasn't given to you because it was reseting.

Also did you do a clean install of Windows or are you trying to boot off an existing install which was already on the hard drive?

I assumed he simply moved a pre-installed drive from another computer.  The /fastboot flag in the boot.ini tells windows not to bother looking for hardware changes (or something close to that).  If you move a drive from system to system, often, if you remove the /fastboot flag, it will often work.  (often equals at least once for me )

Wow no kidding? I thought if the chipset changed it was pretty much a lost cause. My dad just got a new motherboard I'll tell him to try that instead of a new install.

Hmmm, interesting...

Yeah, it was a pre-installed version of XP on the harddisk.

I will try removing the bit in boot.ini or just installing a new copy of XP on a different drive, and get back to y'all.

Thanks!

The one, and only time that I have tested this, I was moving a RAID array from one compaq server to another (upgraded hardware). After the move, the OS would crash during boot. I removed the /fastboot flag from the boot.ini file and it came up fine. Lemme know how it goes.

Today, I decided to re-install windows on another IDE.

When I turned it on it started beeping the system speaker constantly and the fan came on really loud and fast this time, some 4 LED's on the front are lit; 2 green and 2 orange.

I'm thinking now that theres some intermittent hardware fault. :frown:

I'm geussing its a motherboard error although it could be the processor.  I think the RAM is fine or else it wouldn't of booted at all before.

Also theres a light on the motherboard, that was always on since I've had it, its an LED with AUX_PWR written under it.

I just took the heat sink off,

it seems pretty loose, its just held by two bolts in a big plastic chassis, the fan vertical and infront of the heatsink.

Seems quite possible that this is shoddy construction thats causing this problem?

Also, on Win XP I just click internet explorer to get the net up.
I have a ethernet connection so no drivers are needed or anything.
The problem is - I have win '98 computer but I don't know how to do it on that one.
Is it just a case of installing a network driver and it will work?
