How many hours of light do I need to give my mushys?

I just started getting some good mushroom growth. Do I give them 12/12 light cycle? Can I give them less light?
Thanks for any help, eleven34

12 Volt Neon Light = very cheap... saves energy too = $$$$$ for you.
I give the talking shrooms 24 hours neon light.... they are very happy with this.
Good enlightenment....

Yup, keep it to 12/12. Use as blue a light as you can (an incandescent bulb won't cut it). I keep my mushrooms by a window, and once they've gotten their 12 hours of light for the day, I throw some dark clothes over the fruiting chamber until dusk.

If I'm home the light is on if I'm not the light is off,I have never followed any cycle.Mushrooms aren't plants and don't need that much light, they only need light to trigger pinning at tell them what direction to grow in although it does seem that a 12 on 12 off is preferred by some people

I've been wondering about lighting lately as well. I'll hopefully be starting a couple of monotubs soon. Why won't incandescent light bulbs work? I mean, if Stamets says a fraction of a second of light will initiate pinning, I don't understand why an incandescent wouldn't work. I've read about the mushrooms liking the blue side of the light spectrum more.. but I've also read that the light source didn't effect the size or number of the mushroom(s).

Incandescent is the wrong color. Use bluish light like a grow light. Or sunlight. Light is used to initiate pinning, and to tell the mushrooms which way to go- but they don't use the light to grow.

ah, thanks for the clarification. I've heard of people using Christmas lights with success?? Is that true? There seems to be a lot of misconception.

I use a 5 watt nightlight in all of my monotubs. Have for years. They work well.

I think I shall try a few different light sources and see what results pop up. But not until after my first successful grow.
You don't place the 5 watt nightlight inside the monotubs, do you? That sounds very interesting. Do you know what kind of light do they give off, by chance?
I have a small fluorescent that runs on batteries/ac power chord that I just remembered about.
I was thinking it would be easier to light the room that the monotubs are in, but now I'm thinking it might be better/cheaper to light each one individually. Unless I can find cheap lights that will screw into a regular light fixture..
Thankfully I have a bit of time to decide on this.

>>>You don't place the 5 watt night light inside the mono-tubs, do you?
Yes, I do. I use 18 gallon (68L) tubs. Since the lights are incandescent, they put off a little heat. No big deal in larger tubs, but smaller tubs might benefit from an outside light source.
BTW, to the earlier poster, most Christmas lights are incandescent as well.

Incandescents seem to cut it for some people, but not others? hmmm.
 I must research this more
