Definition of the shamanologist
    #7390352 - 09/10/07 12:03 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I find this subject to fit on this forum better than on the off-topic section. Mainly because I haven't found the right kind of explanation for this word from anywehere. My search engine rampage returned weak results so I thought I'd ask it from you, guys.

So the question in whole is: what is a shamanologist and what he/she does?

I've heard this word used on only one person, Terence McKenna. I don't know if he had the "title" self-acclaimed or did someone invent it for him. But what I know about Terence (through that what I have heard and read) I'll try to make my own definition about it. I hope I won't go too much off with this.

A shamanologist is person who researches and studies the ways of a shaman and the shamanism.

This is my piece of the pie in a nutshell. Now it's your turn. Let's try to figure this out in a good manner. And, oh. If someone has a link to webpage with a good definition (I didn't find any), please slap me around with that link.

Cheers.

-ology:(suffix)a branch of learning, knowledge or science> The study of

Shaman:(root word/noun)A word derived from the Tungas language of Siberia, it is a generic term for healers and spiritual leaders in tribal societies. Traditional shamans induced trance states through drums, dancing, ingesting hallucinogens, self-mutilation and deprivation and virtually any means by which one might achieve an altered state of consciousness. While in such a trance, the shaman crosses over into another world to get information for his people such as the cause of illnesses and other misfortunes

a shamanologist is obviously someone who studies shamanism. I discovered this through a latin root word embedded into english E.g. ology. and a siberian word imbedded into english e.g. shaman. and the understanding of how root words and suffixes work in the english language. Thats why english speakers still have to take years and years of english classes when they already speak the language.
