stink bombs are sulfur. sulfur only lets off that horrid smell when the rock gets super heated. that's why volcanicly active areas smell like sulfur.
i'm sure you can find it at some geology or chemistry supply store online.

I don't know what your planned prank is, but here is one I pulled on a roommate that I was ready to kill. I went fishing, caught myself some nice fish for dinner and sacrificed one to a paper bag that I put under the backseat of his car. I would recommend taking the seat out to put it in so that he/she doesn't find it until its good and rotten. It was absolutely rancid.

stink bombs are ammonium sulfide, I think.
Sulfur itself doesn't stink at all... I've handled heaps of it and never caught a whiff of anything. Don't burn it though, sulfur dioxide is not good for you, and sulfur trioxide just turns to sulfuric acid inside of your lungs.
I think the CPSC also regulates sulfur sales under a "safety" pretext, which is bullshit but it's the shit they've shovelled into our mouths at the moment. Only course grain sulfur, the fine stuff reacts more quickly so can go kaboomski.

What they use in stink bombs is hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs bit is more poisonous than cyanide.
Elemental sulfur, the yellow stuff, is virtually odorless.
If you burn sulfur you get sulfur dioxide, very stingy and sour, very poisonous also.
The mother of all stenches, the most ungodly of all reeks, is 2,2-propanedithiol (CH3)2C(SH)2 which is easily made in the lab from hydrogen sulfide and acetone. Its said to be so godawful that a few miligrams of it can stink up a building.
If you want a safe stink bomb, take a jar, fill it halfway with vinegar and put a big piece of real (cow) butter in it. Close the jar and let it interact (hydrolyse) over the course of a couple of weeks.
The smell you get is a mixture of butyric acid and what are called "goat acids" (caprylic, caproic etc acids) which makes for a stench that resembles a corpse and is VERY PERSISTENT on places the liquid is spilled, but its relatively low in toxicity.

I used to be able to find sulphur in the pharmacy isle of the supermarket when I was younger. Regulated now? Wow, how things have changed...
If you know anybody that works with polymers or plastics, then they probably have some 1,4-diaminobutane (putrescine) laying around. It is one of the two main components that give decaying corpses their unique smell (1,5-pentanediamine (cadaverine) being the second).

I think it's only regulated when it's finely-ground. Coarse grain should still be available, and to be honest I can see the CPSC possibly losing in the lawsuits filed by some chemical retailers since they're effectively trying to usurp the ATF's authority in that area.
