horse poo clarification
    #7389610 - 09/09/07 08:25 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I apologize in advance if this info is somewhere, but I used the search engine and there are so many posts on hpoo that I've been unable to find what I'm looking for.

For preps using hpoo most people seem to use the dried stuff that they buy, but what if you have access to lots of fresh hpoo? Can it be used fresh? Should it be dried, weathered, or composted first? A lot of it is also mixed with wood shavings (stall bedding). Should I remove all the wood shavings, leave some? Thanks.

The fresh poo needs to be weathered enough so that it no longer smells like poo, but instead very earthy. There's a lot of ammonia as well as other things in the fresh poo that don't favor mushroom growth. There's several different ways to weather the poo. One way is to simply lay out a few tarps and allow the rain to and sun to take care of the weathering in a few months. You could also look for the most weathered hpoo to begin with. That will put you a couple months/weeks ahead. Basically any way that you can get the poo to feel and smell earthy is a god thing. Also I believe it's fine to have some wood chips in the poo as long as it's not over bearing or the majority of the poo.

I use poo that is only 2 - 3 weeks old, it has most dried. Older would probably be better but I dry it in front of the fire for a few nights, then break it up (it has no smell), pasterize and use it. It works great. Not sure about the wood in it, I get bits of grass in mine and that dosn't seem to hurt.

Check the wood. Hardwood is not bad (I like to add a little to my compost mix), but pine and some softwood bedding have natural anti-fungal agents that can retard mycelial growth.

When it comes to h/poo, the older the better. The best I ever used came from a friend from Kansas. He said it was at least 3 years old. It colonized like wildfire, and produced 5 nice flushes.

Yeah, these are pine shavings. I'll separate the fresh hpoo from them then, it won't be too hard. I'm also going to get some well aged stuff from out in the pastures and there's no wood shavings in that.

Thanks everyone for all the advice.
