Gymnopilus Spectabilis (Junonius)?

Not sure if these are what I think they are, as I've never found them and properly ID'd them. I found some just like 'em the other day in the same general area of town, only bigger, but they got waterlogged and smelled bleachy, so I chucked them.
These were found growing on 2x4s on the ground, near a canal in south Houston. It floods quite a bit in that area.
Orange caps, firm stems, orange spore prints. I tasted and spit out a small piece and it was bitter. One small one looked reddish, and didn't drop a heavy spore print, but looks like the same thing.
Sorry for the crappy lit pics, my flash is either all or none, it seems. I've even set it on the lowest strength, and it's still overpowering.
all of 'em

The foreground is washed out, but you can see the ones in the background better...

The reddish one:

they are gyms but I'm not sure they are junionus.the reason being there is no ring on the stems (though they could have worn away).any green bruising?is the smell kind of sweet smelling with a hint of stale beer?

I can't tell about the bruising... they look like they might have a hint of green in some spots, but nothing like bluing in other actives. It may not be anything but my wishful thinking.
As far as the smell, there's a faint smell, but I can't detect anything specific. I just put them in a small plastic container after sitting out all night, so I'll see if they accumulate a scent in the container after an hour or so.
I'm not even sure I have enough to feel if I made tea. I know you need more than cubensis, and I've heard 10 grams, but not sure if that's dried or what...
I hope I find some active gyms soon, if these aren't. I'm looking forward to that experience.

the bluing looks green in gyms. the ones I find have a definate odor to them. it's 70 grams wet to make tea, which is 7 grams dry.you want to make tea from fresh ones. they are gyms for sure, what kind I dont know.they do look alot like big gyms.

the red one reminds me sort of luteofolius as the caps of luteofolius can often be red to purple with those kinds of fibers coming up. The the mushroom in half and look along the inside of the stem and the gills to look for any green areas.
coon: What gmyn's have you eaten? And how many grams (wet) does it usually take for a good trip? 70 like you said?

Interesting species, they certainly don't look like g. spectabilis to me, but they sure are some sort of gymnopilus.
Reason why your flash doesn't seem to function properly is because you are trying to photograph a mirroring surface (tinfoil), which bounces all the light back into the meter and causes the flash to underexpose. Also, in some shots, the flash doesn't seem to be able to illuminate objects too close to the lens, which is a problem in macro shots.

hello so will you say , your mushrooms go from redish in young to tan in age, they look all the same and specially if they where close or in the same log, that redish maybe think of luteofolius too, try to take complety with a knife the base next time , the bluing in my small xperience is more in the lower part or open up in 2, to see some changes of colours , some other than blue or green could appear

I think you're right about luteofolius.. seems to fit.
too bad the maggots are ruining them... I gotta toss a couple of 'em, but I have spores to spray in some areas around here. Lots of waterways, with lots of trees around... I'm sure I can get some cultivated. I think I'll put a bunch of spores from these on the logs on the side of the house... Any suggestions? Soak the logs for a couple days first?

I see most greening in luteofolius on the cap if it's a thin cap, or if I cut it open on the stem. I found the first batch of fall at the playground next to me today. I ate about 30 grams wet and had a nice euphoria while smoking bud.
Luteofolius is pretty much the only mushroom I know since it's the only active I've ever found.
Just because there's no greening though they may still be active.
But only these two look like luteofolius:

the others are something else, maybe a look-a-like species, because there should be fibers that are fuzzy on the caps.

I always try to eat 100 grams wet. No tea just eat the mushrooms whole and raw.
I usually just eat til I feel the trip coming on. If all 100 is down before I'm tripping so be it, however, if I start tripping at like 70 I stop.

goddamn, that seems like alot of mushrooms to have to eat... I can't even comprehend what 100 grams is. I mean, I know what a gram is, but I guess without a scale, I don't really have a frame of reference.
I don't think I have enough.
Also, those are all the same kind of mushrooms. They may not all look the same in the pics, but they were all growing on the same sides of the pieces of wood they were found on, in a line, in the same 10 square foot area. The stems are the same, the cap texture is the same. The young reddish one is different looking, but if it's the same species as the large orange one, then the other large orange ones are the same species.
know what I mean? You can tell when something is off between two different species if you have them side by side...

Fear not though! Go buy some wood chips and act fast, and get some spores or water the mushroom and place it in some woodchips, actually you could probably pull off a liquid culture and then find a good woodchip area to grow them.

Here are some G. luteofolius found in the Bay Area, CA.

I and Mr. rockefeller finally got around to testing the potency of this species, dried. We first made lemon mushroom tea of 6 grams dried- 3g each- the effects were sudden, though mild. So we decided to measure out another 6 grams.... We concluded that 9grams or so dried (perhaps more), per person, would make for a good dose.
Once the rains kicks up here, i know of a place where G. luteofolius fruit by the hundreds, so I will then update with more concise dosage info, based on both dry and fresh samples when that time arrives.

cool.
I'm looking forward to finding more and concluding my own tests. I'll be on the lookout this week as well.
I found a few more last week that I chucked, as they got rained on after collection and were waterlogged and smelled like bleach (though that could have been environmental... long story).
I think their time is now... I need to find more.

Have you guys noticed any loss of potency to gymns when dried like other species? Or does it stay relatively about the same.

I don see how you could ever really tell without proper test's being taken. I mean if you take a sample and dry it and dose it how would you know, what it could've been wet.

I have picked pounds of gyms from the same cluster and have DEFINETLY noticed a potentcy decrease. I'm not talking slight, I'm talking....uhhhh are you sure these mushrooms will make me trip.....
Like I said 100 grams wet ( so you'd think 10 grams dry ) but nooooo. 100 grams wet will give me full blown egoloss every now and then. I'm lucky if 1 ounce dry gets me to a level 3, and thats what...280 grams wet.

Hmm so it sounds like tea may be best for gymnopilus then, as I rather chug some liquid than eat 100 grams wet of gyms.

Thank god I've never encountered anything crunchy with Gymn's. I would definitely chuck up anything in my mouth on the spot.
*Edit: Also what's the most potent gymn's you've ever found? Like what's the least amount it's taken you to trip, or the average amount to send you on a crazy trip?
