And now there's opium poppies growing all around my countryside. Cannabis? Fuck no! That's dangerous. Here, have some UK manufactured opium.

"Look, we know you need development and that is coming, but the lack of development is not an excuse to go against the constitution, to break the law, to support the enemy," said Wankel. "I mean, that's part of the message that goes out to the people."
So the message is you need to starve and die, and live in poverty, until "we" feel like getting off our ass and do something for you.
Also, who exactly is the "enemy" the person giving farmers money to grow a plant, and even being kind enough to pick it up for the farmers... or the person saying you can't grow that, you need to starve instead.

yeah i have no idea where US 'logic' comes from, seems we always do the exact opposite of the right thing to do...that makes a hell of a lot of sense there. lets go bang on a nuclear bomb with a hammer, it seems logical.

End the Federal Reserve/audit the gold reserves at Fort Knox, abolish the IRS, end all wars and occupancies, stop the building of an empire that will inevitably fail, and cut all unconstitutional federal programs. Put the power back in the peoples' hands by ending this nanny-state.

This story has been gaining more press in recent months I have noticed. I even saw a program on CNN last night about this "new war on poppies."
There was one portion of the program where they were talking to an old man whose fields had just been wiped out. He had given his daughter to the drug buyers as collateral for payment against his future opium. The man was crying, he demanded to know what he should do now. "What will my children and I eat this year, dust?"
It is a terrible situation, but these silly eradication measures will work about as well as they have for coca production in South America. Any fool can see that so long as the economic incentive to grow a crop is there even well meaning individuals will participate. The majority of these farmers really are interested in survival. A lot of folks who have never lived in similar conditions seem to have a hard time understanding this.
I find it interesting that the Taliban is fingered so frequently as the cause of this opium production. I thought that before they were brought down in Afghanistan the Taliban strongly discouraged opium production in Afghanistan on religious grounds?
It was only after the Taliban was removed from Afghanistan I thought that the massive increase in Opium production occurred. I imagine that after being removed from their position of power any previous qualms about being involved with the drug trade vanished. Perhaps I am wrong about this, I don't recall where I got this information from but I do remember reading that the Taliban was against drug use and opium production. If they always have been involved in this industry it makes me wonder where I recieved this poor information from.

Yeah, I think the Taliban would try to protect their opium farmers with better weapons than sticks and rocks.

soon the CIA is gonna revert back to doing what it did in the golden triangle (laos, burma thailand) in the 60s and 70s and start shipping heroin and opium into the USA directly, just to keep it out of taliban hands. i wouldnt be at all surprised if there was some new form of Air America operating right now. if we bought the opium from them, they would be alot friendlier to us and less inclined to work with the taliban.....sounds just like a CIA type of plan, doesnt it? cut the terrorists out of the drug trade by shipping heroin straight to our inner cities...kill two birds with one stone, weaken terrorism and pacify the lower class minority communities

I find absolutely nothing at all hypocritical about a rich white man who works for the most violent, warmongering & thieving government in the history of the world telling poor farmers in a country that has seen nothing but death & destruction for decades (half of the reason for that being the United States) that their children should starve to death. I think it's the embodiment of compassionate conservatism, & that Jesus would tell them the same thing.
