Does this sound right? *Casing*

I'm finishing my first flush in the mycobag (2lb. grain-based w/ b+), and wanna try casing next. I've already searched, but I was hoping I could lay out my general plan, and hopefully somebody can tell me if any of this is wrong. Hopefully it can help somebody else too.

Tonight I'm gonna take the substrate out of the bag, pluck off any little shrooms still on there and dunk it in a sealed airless bag with plain tap water (no h202). It will be in the fridge overnight. Tomorrow/about 12 hours later I plan to take the block out, dry off excess water with a paper towel.

After that I plan to take the colonized substrate, put it back in the bag with the whole top of the bag cut off right above the substrate level. I then plan to use vermiculite and enriched soil to case, cleaning the mix using the microwave tek. I will put about a 1/2" layer of moist casing on top of the substrate, packing it down onto the cake very gently. I'll let it partially colonize the casing layer for a few days, then resume hitting it with light and fruiting conditions. During fruiting I'll try to fan/mist it as often as possible, or at least once a day.

The FC is a small aquarium....about 25 gallons. I plan to seal this off airtight, and manually provide humidity and FAE. I'd rather have somebody stop me here than screwing shit up to learn...any thoughts/tips would be appreciated - Bof

Good to see someone did their homework.

Suggestions:

1. Boil your tap water and allow it to cool before dunking to evaporate off clorine and kill any nasties present in tap water. It's just a precaution I use that seems to help cut down on contamination.

2. Don't dry your substrate with a paper towel. Either let it air dry or place it directly into the FC.

3. Don't worry about making your FC airtight. Even though you're manually providing FAE, you want a little air circulation to prevent your air inside the FC from becoming stagnant.

4. No soil in your casing mix. Replace it with sphagnum peat moss, and don't forget to PH balance it with some lime.

5. Don't pack your casing layer down. Leave it loose and airy.
Good luck.

hmmm....do I need to add something to the casing or can I just use straight vermiculite? I'd like to keep it as simple as possible, it's very difficult for me to find a private enough place/time to do something like mix and sterilize a casing layer. Thanks for the tips, Bof

Also, you might want to think about putting some tinfoil or whatnot around the bag to keep the light off the clear sides. If you don't you'll probably have a bunch of growth on the sides and they can be difficult to harvest without pulling the whole thing out of it's wrapper.
