So when my cakes are finished i want to dunk them, im not sure when to do this though, should i dunk my cakes before i spawn them? should i dunk after ive spawned and thats colonized, or should i dunk after the spawn and casing have colonized? Ive been searching but cant find the right answer..... suggestions on when to do this and how?

no you don't need to! if you spawn just adjust the moisture contain.

i mean the moisture contain of your bulk substrate. if you case it is better first to crumble, than to spray with some peroxide(optional) water, to give the moisture it will need. when you dunk it first it will be hard to crumble, because it is so wet. you will have a wet past you can not handle with and you mycelium will just hard recover = contamination danger. i wish you the best success.

I read that peroxide is NEVER good for mycelial growth, that it is only used to eliminate cobweb mold or something similar.... My plan is to take my cakes and spawn them..... i have a bag of casing too but that was when i was planning to case.... should i mix that in as if it were spawn, just to get rid of it?

ok, i'm a little confused by the terminology, but lets see how i might help
if you are simply birthing the cake, and placing it in a terrarium and watching mushrooms grow on it.. then dunk it before you place it into the terrarium for 3x bigger flush
if you are planning on spawning the cake (crumbled) to rye substrate or something of the sort, then this is what i reccomend and have had success with
(you don't need to dunk the cake, if spawning to grain substrate, your grain should have plenty of moisture to share with your culture, or if casing it, i've had success with a SLIGHTLY more wet casing layer than usual [the excess usually gets sucked up by the cake])
get your cake jar and an unopened brand new ziplock bag (you'll need the freezer bag size PREFERRABLY with the zipper) just throw your cake in the bag and proceed to crumble it up into as fine a powder as you can
now with this, you can do two things (or alot more, but i've only done the following two)
you can add some of it to a sterilized rye jar (i suggest, only put it in about half as much seed as normal) and they colonize VERY quickly, so i like to think that makes contam nearly impossible. mine fully colonized in less than 2 days, no lie.
or you can take the crumbled cake, put it right into a casing tray and case it!

Anarch, im not going to just birth the cakes in my terrarium, i want to get higher yields then that...i was a little confused... my plan is to spawn my brf cakes to hpoo and straw, but i was curious about the moisture content of the cake. Will it get enough moisture from the hpoo and straw once spawned? Should i mist it after i spawn, before it colonizes the spawn? or should i mist it right before i put it in my terr.? how often will i need to mist once its in there?
And after these cakes are finished im sticking to mycopaths bags, and im going to try high mountain composts as well.... because they are big enough i can just inoc them and not have to worry about spawning or casing them. I should be getting a rye bag and a wbs bag in soon...

if its PF cakes, i think its always best to dunk
produces better because the cake is totally hydrated

i just don't like the idea of dunking before crumbling because it will make a sloppy mess it seems to me (never tried it) that it would be all muddy and too wet for the mycelia to have an easy time of recolonizing for the casing
this is a little experiment i did with the left over of a crumbled cake i didn't dunk it or mist it
it's my opinion (which doesn't count for a lot) that if you REALLY wanna dunk, put your crumbled un-dunked cake into your casing, let it colonize or w/e then dunk the whole thing, cuz then it will be held togethor again, alot like a jar-shaped cake
that's what i intend to do this week with my 3 other brazilian cakes unless someone covinces me there's a better way

Thats what i was thinking, to spawn and after its re colonized i can just mist until it get the "shiny" saturated look (as compared to dunking) and then i can fan like 5 times a day and mist every 3 or 4 correct?

well i've heard misting isn't really neccesary after the first week or something, so i don't do it
and i've heard misting between flushes works just fine and dunking isn't really neccesary i'm gonna attempt both with my casings that are growing now

Really?? Wow that almost makes this too easy! -Crumble cakes and mix with bulk substrate and lay very flat in a tray -Incubate so they recolonize - Layer FC with perlite and dampen with no standing water - Only mist between flushes
WOW, not having to worry about misting makes this so easy! Thanks for your help!
