My cat peed on my bed
    #7383756 - 09/08/07 01:38 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

He's a one year old neutered male and it's not the first time.
He has peed on things now and then his entire life but often with several months in between and often only small puddles. Now he's pissed outside the box twice in a week though. He first pissed on a pile of bed clothing and just now on my hellishly expensive bed:sad: This time he pissed a lot.

Any ides on why this might be.
He's exclusively an indoors cat so I'm afraid that that might be the problem; he cant move around as he wants and expresses his stress this way, but he doesn't seem stressed. He runs around a bit each night but most of the time he's chilling and snuggling with me or my girl or playing with our other cat.

Might it be from urinary tract infection? Or is it strange that it's so far between the times?

i say you let him out, all cats find there way back home if they care to.

i think it will help him with his spraying. i have three cats and when the morning comes they leave and come back at night and never piss. some times i can tell they need to cause they will sit by the door were my pc is and look at me like fool i need to leave!

I can't, I live at the second floor so the cat can't come back.

damn it. put a leash on him and take him to the park

im sure youd keep a clean box. i think its a marking habbit, its natural to cats. it might not even be piss. some times they just spray this odder to show other cats that this is their area. he might be trying to show you that thats hes area and the girls are there to see him

cook it

but really, yea, urinary tract infection is possible, although it would be much more frequent than what you've described.  it could be pissed off at you guys for something, etc

cats are funny creatures

are there elivators and stuff? do you have a stair way ? maybe if you walk him out he might follow you back home.

if you have a security door im sure if people see him siting by the door they will let him in.

if there are no elevaters it could still be a lil easy to teach him that he can go out side and wait at the door till some one opens it then he can run to the door where you live. just an idea

Yeah, I clean it daily and changes the sand every 10-14th day
I think a possibility is that he dislikes the smell of our other cats urine.
Quote:

It's definitely piss, I can tell the difference.
Also: it's been pools of it at times.
Quote:

Not likely, he's a real sucker() for his mum and dad, he could be mad at his  situation though(frustrated that he's in a too confined place etc.)

Me and the girl has spoken about it a bit. At first we were in favor of giving him away to someone with a home where he could be outside in the days, but: Now we decided to check if we can fix the problem any other way(we are really :inlove: in this cat)
So we're getting an extra sandbox(I saw that tip in a related thread, that way he doesn't have to smell the other cats piss and it will be cleaner as I still will be changing the sand as often) we're also taking him to the vet for a checkup. And until we're sure he has stopped peeing indoors we'll cover the bed with a bedspread that repels fluid.

Nah I think LAGraff is right, our other cat used to wait at the outer door until she was let in at our previous address(she ran away now and then:lol:) the problem is that this one doesn't scratch doors or in other ways shows that he wants in. He just sits there waiting for the door to open, so there's a big risk that he'd be sitting there for hours many times.

The foggyness in his eyes are purely a product of the flare.

Cute cat but this is why you should avoid males. I think it's pretty common for male cats to spray/piss on everything. My parents gave me a male cat for x-mas when I was five and that's the only male cat I'll ever have room in my heart for. I much prefer female cats overall and that's what my fiance and I have now. She's probably my fav cat ever and I don't know if I'll even want anymore cats after her. But we have no problems with her whatsoever. The only problem we have with her is she wipes her pissy littery paws on the wall by her litterbox. We were joking that we should put up a little towel rack so that she could have a towel to do it on.

Anyway, you said your cat is one year old and neutered. If the neutering was done any time recently then that could have something to do with it. Ask your local vet and they'll probably agree. When our cat was spayed she was acting pretty out of sorts for a while too. Just give it some time.

He was neutered when 12 weeks old so it's not that.
I think he might be very sensitive to bad smell in the litter-box so hopefully a second box and more frequent emptying of it could solve the problem.

Super qute cat you've got there!

Hey, thanks.

You might be right but it sounds like you're already doing a sufficient job of keeping it clean.

It's mainly because it have never happened in the few days closest to me changing the sand and also I saw this post(in response to someone else with an almost identical problem):
Quote:

you also say you have multiple cats. This could also cause an issue if you're using one litter box for all of them and not keeping it clean enough, or, if he has a distaste for the sent of one of the other cats.

Yeah, that's a good point. They make special litter for multiple cats too.

It's a UTI

My cat (also adult neutered and indoor cat) peed on my sleeping roomie and dirty clothes in baskets or in the basement floor

Take him to the vet and get some antibiotics. it shouldn't cost a lot. I think my cost was $15 for the 10 day supply and then $25 for the visit. A lot of cities actually have those free or reduce cost vet clinics if money is an issue.

it's kinda tricky to get a cat to take a pill... Have the vet show you how. if the cat is really bad about not taking a pill or you don't think you can do it, then you can get the antibiotic in liquid form. it might cost more, but I don't know.

my cat stopped peeing on beds, but is like "addicted" to peeing on dirty clothes that are either in those short laundry baskets or in the floor in basement.

I just got a taller hamper seperator that's like laundry bags that hang inside a pvc frame. then when it's laundry day i just remove the bags from the fram and hang them from the rafters of the basement. it seems clothes in the floor is a "trigger" now.

also keep your litter box REALLY clean

the best thing I've ever used for litterbox control is those "sifting" liners. it's a stack of liners that have holes in the bottom, so all you have to do is pick up a layer and shake. it's way easier, quicker, and less nasty than using those nasty scoops.

I would have put my money on an UTI if it weren't for the low frequency(until this time)
