Bubblers for humididty!
    #738187 - 07/11/02 03:52 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Hey everybody,

As some of you may know i am having alot of trouble with perlite humidity, the problem being the rH never goes above 67%. I did everything right in 2 different terrariums, neither had an rH above 70% with perlite .

Anyways i wanted to know how a bubbler works. An explanetion of the basic concept would be greaty appriciated.

Save my cakes, be a pal, help me out!

I don't know anything about bubblers, but I do know that you shouldn't give up on perlite. Try a few alternate terrariums; what are you using? How many cakes do you have? Here's a good emergency terrarium, if you are concerned about your cakes-

Take some perlite, soak it in water. Add it to the bottom of a container (tupperware, anything that is just big enough to hold your cakes but will fit inside of a trash bag) and then set the cakes on the perlite. Make sure the perlite isn't too wet. Might want to add some peroxide. Once you have that set up, get a trash bag and put the tray inside the bag. Make sure it's not a cheap one with leaks. Get most of the air out of the bag and seal it off with a twist tie. What will happen is the humidity will be extremely high in the bag, and you can take it out once /twice a day for air exchange and light. You can even prop one side up once it starts to fruit with a coat hanger or anything that will work to raise one side. Hope this helps if you're in a jam!

A solution that I've seen work well is to use an inexpensive fish tank air pump to push air through an airstone that is sitting in a container of water with some H2O2 for sterility. A growing chamber that I know of uses that and perlite and maintains high 90's RH.

One thing to remember is that small water droplets are thrown buy the bubbler, so be careful that your cakes are not getting coated with H2O.

Check out my link from earlier.

For the bubbler problems with the bubbles throwing water everywhere, could i just put a fine screen over it so water would get caught in it but rH would still pass thought?

Works like this ... the 1/4" hoses go to an aquarium air pump.

I thought a bubbler was for air exchange in conjunction with air holes for the terrarium? Does it affect humidity?

Yes it effects humidity. As you see it this set-up holds 89% to 90% humidity.
The bubblers are for air exchange and humidity.

Fd try turning the container upside-down, if it is like the one sixpac440 posted. Use the top of it as the floor. Where the top(now the bottom) reaches the tub, pore water around the edge to seal the inside from the outside. Your rh will go up. If not, buy a ultrasonic humidifier. Keep using the perlite... it makes it so much EZer. peace
