    #7383043 - 09/08/07 09:53 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I did a search but didn't find anything. Can malted barley be used as a replacement for rye berries? I have alot of malted barely and cannot find rey berries I searched all local organic food stores in my area.. I hope to make some shiitake spawn from an agar clone or maybe portobello.
any help would be greatly apprecieted

Try it, it should work. If it sticks together to much add some wet sawdust or vermiculite, before you pressure cook it to keep it broken up.

ok I am making a shiitake print now from my shiitake log .. I will try to inoculate some barley and see how it goes.. finding the right soaking or cooking time to get the water right is going to be the hard part .. I guess I will have to get some 1/2 pint jars and do some trial and error and see how to get moisture correct.

I'd err on the dry side since malt has already been soaked and kiln dried.
