Chanterelles - PNW
    #7368471 - 09/04/07 07:17 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I know it's a little early, but I found this young chanterelle while walking the dogs:

Bruising orange, white flesh when cut in half, fragrant smell, found growing in moss under conifer and decidious tree mix, no spore print (not sure how to make one with a vase fungi).

Picked them before so I'm pretty sure on ID, sorry I didn't do the complete ID request...

did you look at the keys for cantherellus tubaeformis?
or maybe Cantherellus formosas ( pacific chanterelle)?

regular cantherellus cibarius are alot more yellow.

My camera sort of made it whiter, you can see the color better on the cut open picture.

I checked the key for tubaeformis, definitely not, but I don't have formosa in my books.

I think they are cibarius, they have a large color range, depending on moisture, tempature, habitat, ect., yours match the shape and I have found them that color.

found my first ones the other day, then found a shitload more today. I'm in chanterelle heaven right now...

looks about right, sounds about right. YMMV.

I've seen that sort of scaly looking stem on some of the chanterelles I've picked this year. That's an odd looking one (at least in the photos), but the shape is right, and if you've got the right odor then you should be OK.

Happy mushrooming!

Wow, nice pic!

Mine were much more immature...but I have to contend with the abundant slug population, so I picked mine regardless.

Hopefully there is lots more to come.

What did you make with yours? or did you dry them?

I know! Damn slugs have been a big problem for me this year. I've found that certain parts of the woods don't have any slugs and the mushrooms are prime for a long time before they are overly mature. I should do some research on slugs.

The first pics look a lot like the chanterelles I've found in south Puget Sound, almost a pale apricot peachy color that turns yellowy orange when handled or moist, I've never found the really pure golden yellow kind. I've been finding them since the end of July, I took a couple and dried them then steeped them in vodka (sounds weird but it tasted really fruity and good). I hit the payload a few weeks ago though after a rainstorm when I gathered three lbs. I probably could have gotten, no exaggeration, 10 lbs but I didn't want to be greedy. I made soup stock and cream of mushroom soup. I still have a whole paperbag full. Viva la cantharellus!
