11 days left -- to case or not to case?
    #7381922 - 09/07/07 11:27 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

OK...here's the situation...

I'll be gone for a week in 11 days and a monotub was spawned on 9/1 with 2 lbs of WBS and 5 lbs of Hpoo + worm castings. Tub has been sitting in a closet covered loosely with a plastic bag. Temps in the closet are around 78-80 F I'm guessing. I peeked today and it looks pretty good, but I was going to give it a couple more days to make sure.

I'd like to get the first harvest in before I leave. My question is -- do I have time to case or should I just fruit directly from the Hpoo? My casing mix is 60/40 verm+coir, which I later read wasn't that great for casing anyway since it contains nutrients.

At this point I can:

1. Case it as I would normally.
2. Apply a very light casing layer to even out the surface.
3. No casing, just start fruiting in a couple of days.

I don't need a ridiculous amount of shrooms. Just an oz or so dry would be pretty good for me.

What would you do?

Personally, I would just do a light casing layer of straight hydrated vermiculite, wait a couple of days then fruit it, just to help with water retention, although i have seen great results with no casing layer as long as you can keep your substrate from drying out and your humidity good and high for primordia formations. Light verm works well in a pinch!

How long does it take for myc to start poking through the casing layer (assume 1/4" deep) and then start pinning? On the other hand, how long does it take an uncased substrate to pin and mature?

Basically I want to avoid the situation where they mature at some point while I'm gone (between the 19th and 26th), and I come back to a mess of dropped spores and rotting shrooms... So, whatever method would allow me to accelerate the process to harvest first flush before I leave, or delay it so I can harvest when I get back would be best.

Honestly your right on the cusp of both problems, it will only take a couple of days for the myc to start poking through casing layer, if you initiate pinning now with no casing layer....you MIGHT MIGHT MIGHT be able to pull off a harvest befor eyou leave, but man, thats gonna be SOO close, you will probably end up coming home to a spore covered casing layer with rotting mushrooms, the other side of it is this, you could initiate pinning, then right before you leave, pick all the mushrooms that have formed wether they are mature or not, then when you get back you will have a nice second flush started and waiting for you.

Will a thicker casing layer slow down the process enough? There is also the issue of the slightly nutritious casing material I'm using - 40% coir + 60% verm, which I've heard can attract contams. Worth the risk?

Also, dunno if it makes at all a difference, but the strain is Costa Rica.
