Would casing reduce nutrient % available

Just wondering if it is worth casing poo after first flush and thought that if a casing layer is put over the poo wouldn't that reduce the nutrients available compared to moisture in the substrate (which has much more nutrients in it) ? Or does the casing moisture go down into the substrate ? Maybe dunking the substrate would be better than casing ?

yeah .. right. I probably didn't explain that clearly.
Just seems if the mushrooms are sucking pure water from a casing it would have less nutrients than water in the substrate. So my theory was that _maybe_ non cased mushrooms would be better (eg more potent, maybe bigger etc).

yes dunk it in a ziplock bag (gallon) overnight). if you add salt it will increase the number of pins. mixing in flour will also supply extra nutrients.

You don't want to add casing material after first, or any other flush. The mycelium won't colonize it, so it's more likely to contaminate.
The purpose of casing is to supply moisture, not nutrients. I'd suggest dunking your substrate in plain water. RR

When dunking a casing what exactly do you do? Stick the whole casing underwater for a time? Then just pour out the water?

Well, I was going to just fill the try with water for a few hours and drain it .. but that would be the first time I ever did it so I might be wrong !

That will work. You can also set it in the sink and let the faucet fill up the tray and gently run over the edges for a few hours. Place something on top of the substrate to prevent it from floating. RR

I'll have to go for the soaking .. the only water I have here comes from the sky and it dosn't fall often enought to use too liberally .. although it would water the garden at the same time I guess
