What exactly is a sclerotium?

I dont want to sound completely stupid, but what is a sclerotium? What is its purpose to the mushrooms life cycle? Why do some strains have them and some dont?

A sclerotia is the dormant stage of some types of mushrooms, that grow underground, allowing it to survive from one year to another against hard/unfavorable weather conditions. Having different forms and sizes made of a cortex( a tough outer layer, much like the outside skin of the roots of a plant/tree, only not as thick, consists of cells rich in melanin that produce black colour) outside and medulla (Inner pseudo-tissue of the sclerotium made of thick mycelial hyphae holding together in thick clumps)inside.

Pseudosclerotia and microsclerotia (small sclerotia) may have not this basic structure of sclerotia and could be made of agglomerated cells
